At two campaign rallies in Tennessee on Saturday night, the Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.
But by Sunday morning, in a dramatic change of tone, Mr. Cain, a former restaurant executive, said he was only kidding.
“That’s a joke,” Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he was asked about the electrified fence. “That’s not a serious plan. I’ve also said America needs to get a sense of humor.”
Mr. Cain’s attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain was detailed and repetitive. He did not introduce his thoughts as anything but serious commentary, beginning with the words, “We have a crisis of illegal immigration.”
And the crowds responded with cheers, not laughs.

But who has worked for Cain?
I know what you mean. The hatred of Mexicans, including the legal ones is disconcerting. We’ve seen this type of hatred before in history and it’s not pretty. Of course, when you dig into the shit stirrers you find that they have a similar belief system, KWIM?
If the rhetoric doesn’t tone down then this isn’t the place for me to post. It’s one thing to discuss the issue of securing the border. Rational discussion isn’t what happens far too often anymore.
If Perry doesn’t get religion and back off the pandering to Hispanics and recant his meeting with La Raza then the top of my voting card starts with the senate.
If Cain is being honest here, there’s nothing wrong with any of his “electric fence” comments.
As long as he’s sincere, then we can count on him to do something about the problem.
I heard it was such a thigh-slapper that Borscht Belt lounge comedians are already working it into their schticks.
alice in wonderland....you need to brush up on your history. This country was NOT founded on "feel good" emotions. Many people died to create this wonderful country and many people died to keep it free.
If some stupid mother wants to take a chance with her children, that is NOT our problem, but hers. If she's willing to take the chance of climbing an electric fence with her children, she should be bold enough to get HER OWN COUNTRY back.
Cain must have taken the John ‘I started a joke’ Kerry online course in joke-telling.
Saying we need an electrified fence to kill people, joke or not, is more severe politicially than ‘macaca’ or YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Republicans need the law abiding Hispanic votes, they are becoming a larger and larger demographic.
And even non-Hispanic voters, who stop and think, don't agree with electric fences. Can you imagine some little Mexican kid touching the fence and dying, do you have any idea of the political repercussions?!

I’m glad Perry and Romney are nowhere near it
Oh look, how cute. The monkey throws more crap and refuses to answer any questions or address issues.
It’s ironic, really, how close Cain and Perry are on the EPA and almost everything in fact. It’s ironic how much the 9-9-9 plan would do for Perry’s goal of making “Washington DC as inconsequential” as possible in all of our lives. And on immigration, the fence, and the big issues, they are very close too. (in state tuition is not that big of a piece of that issue, sorry, it’s not).
Foolish for supporters of one to trash the other. Very likely we will all have to support one or the other (I just don’t think Mitt will ever get over 30%). And in addition to foolish, it’s intellectually schizo to boot.
I’m more concerned about AMERICAN kids and families killed by illegals of any nationality funneled through Mexico.
I don’t give a rat’s tush about putting Mexican kids over American security, citizens, families or goldfish.

I believe it probably states 1/2 Arab, not black or African. It would explain his support for all that is mooslimb and his hate towards Israel.
I don’t find that funny. Maybe the next bright idea he will come up with is to go into businesses and killing the employers that HIRE illegals. but he will just be joking. /s

I think you're right. It's his way of making it plain that he intends to do whatever it takes to secure the border and stop the invasion of illegal aliens. In his book he says that he'd build a 20 foot wall and a moat, which he would call "Herman's Moat." It's a humorous exagerration to make a point.
On Meet The Press this morning, he told Dick Gregory his plan was 4-fold:
1. Secure the border with a combination of physical fence, technology and troops where needed.
2. Promote the legal path to citizenship that's already there.
3. Enforce the laws that are already there
4. Empower the states to do what the federal government can't or won't do.
