Cain Proposes Electrified Border Fence
Pravda- NY Times Division ^ | 10/15/11 | Wyatt

Posted on 10/15/2011 4:18:53 PM PDT by VinL

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally...

Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops “with real guns and real bullets” on the border to stop illegal immigration.

The remarks were among the most pointed yet by Mr. Cain about illegal immigration, and they come as he is enjoying a surge in national political polls on the back of his victory in a recent Florida straw poll..

It is not the first time that Mr. Cain has floated the idea of an electrified fence. He has told the story many times of a caller to his former radio show who chastised him for talking about building a border fence, saying that such an idea was impractical.

“It’s going to be 20 feet high. It’s going to have barbed wire on the top. It’s going to be electrified. And there’s going to be a sign on the other side saying, ‘It will kill you — Warning.’” At an earlier rally, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn., he added that the sign would be written “in English and in Spanish.”

“This nation has always been a nation with wide open doors,” Mr. Cain said at the second rally. “We want to make it easy for people to come through the front door. And we’re going to shut off the back door so you don’t have to sneak into America.”

I may have overstepped my bounds on a technicality.

I did not see the original post and may have been out of line with the Uncle Adolf pot shot.

“”No Fence in the middle of the desert means that the State of Israel supports open borders and Palestinian terrorist infiltrators”.
“No Fence in the middle of the desert means that the Governor of Texas supports open borders and illegal immigration.””

Yuck, yuck, yuck. You sure are witty tonight.

Well isn’t that the way America is suppose to work? /s

You can bet it happened because some jackhole in Peoria felt queasy about the border.

You simply electrify the fence every 100 feet or so. Put up a big steel pole, with the equipment on top, and fire it up. Do a DC drop on that sucker (what was Michele Malkin said ~ 9 amp?) and you don’t have to overcome miles and miles of conductor.

Bingo.

2 billion for a simple fence.
They dont calculate in legal battles or infrastructure that is needed to patrol the fence in the middle of nowhere.

There is good reason that Israel does not fence and patrol the Negev desert *cost to benefit ratio*

Today, Henry is assistant chief of the Border Patrol's San Diego sector. He says apprehensions here are down 95 percent, from 100,000 a year to 5,000 a year, largely because the single strand of cable marking the border was replaced by double — and in some places, triple — fencing.

Yep, now give him a gun and it will go down from 5,000 to zero.

Obama doesn’t want a fence. He’d rather have a nation of maleable compesinos who are ready to work for their padrones without question, and who will always reliably vote for the Democrats.

We can not criticize the great Herman Cain.

It will be interesting to see how the media responds to this.

$$Are you $$$kidding?$$ This is a freakin race-war $$$goldmine$$$.

I was still a Cain fan at 3pmish. Not so anymore. He wants to fan the fires of race, let him. But he need remember, live by the sword, die by the sword.

“I simply disagree that a wall is feasible. I think other ways might be more effective.”

Perry’s been my governor for a DECADE and he could care less what the people of the state think...and doesn’t change direction until there’s a near revolution (and the potential for huge political damage). He has yet to back off of saying that little girls should be shot up with Gardacil...he’s only said that he did it wrong.

Cain...we don’t know, but I trust that he at least will listen to people, and I know that he CANNOT be any worse than Perry in this area (not possible for anyone to be).

This is why the border defense will need supplemented with drones equipped with Hellfire missiles.

There's no need at all to send anyone out there to stop you.

Eventually the Protect Robots will dispose of whatever threats present themselves.

Drive in the ground a copper ground rod [...] and it will short out the circuit, making the fence safe for transit.

This would be the case only if you use the ground as the return path. But you don't have to do it this way; earth is not very conductive, especially in a hot, dry desert.

As a better example, drive two insulating sticks into the ground first. Then hang several rows of wires between them. Insert insulating spacers as required, so that sagging wires don't touch each other. Then apply three phases of 380V to wires 1, N, 2, N, 3, N counting from the bottom. Then continue upward in the same order if you have more wires. Any adjacent pair of wires will be under 220V. Any wires over N will be at 380V.

Such a fence is harder to short. First, it is isolated from the ground. If you walk up to it and touch any one wire nothing will happen to you. However if you start climbing and touch two wires... then you will get a shock of your life. Secondly, there are three independent coils of the transformer (three independent power sources) so if someone shorts wires 1 and N, the N and 2 are still deadly.

In any case, once the attacker starts shorting things the guard walks up to his Tac-50 and takes care of the invader. If there are two watch towers per mile the maximum distance the guard needs to shoot is 500 yards, which is very much doable against a man-sized target even with a common hunting rifle.

“Yes, we’ve a problem with illegals and something needs to be done. Erecting a Soviet or Nazi style barrier is not the answer, nor is it American. “

I disagree.

Faced with unrestrained hordes (and I chose that word carefully) streaming across our border, the only thing that will indeed “restrain” their movement is a physical barrier of some sort.

Where the third world pushes against the first, we must offer resistance. Otherwise, the effect will be that of a burgeoning river overflowing its banks and inundating those on the shore.

Words won’t stop them.
Laws won’t stop them.
Even “taking away their benefits” won’t stop them — because even without such benefits, many (if not most) of them will be far better off _here_, then they were _there_.

I spent a year in Germany, 1971, care of the U.S. Army. During that time, I took something called the “Berlin Orientation Tour”, where American troops spent a week in the divided city.

Part of the tour was a trip to The Wall. It was imposing, actually two walls with a security strip in between, and the Stasi driving around in their vehicles. Yes, some East Germans got through it. But, by and large, the Berlin Wall did what it was constructed to do. That is, it prevented movement across the border.

But I did more than observe The Wall. I _went through_ it, in uniform, at Checkpoint Charlie and toured the communist East. Got to stroll around a bit unaccompanied for a couple of hours. Quite an experience, to actually have been behind the Iron Curtain, as an American soldier, in uniform.

Walls _do_ work, when nothing else will.

Having written that, if indeed Mr. Cain made a comment about “an electric fence”, that ain’t gonna help him much. Not much at all....

Just sayin’...

Nope. I have a problem with stupid slogans that get nothing done.

I have a problem with a national sales tax and calling on “super committees”

You are responding to a NYT blog interpretation ~ let me explain. The NYT is afraid to call him an "n-word" in public so they are simply screwing with his responses to his radio talk show callers, and to a joke he tells.

You want to know why the fence is 40 ft tall? To beat out the 31 ft ladder ~ that was a stock answer Leftwingtards and perry were making to the 30 ft fence issue.

The cold hard facts are some of you people are too comfortable with illegal aliens around. This week South Park ran a piece that fitted you perfectly.

No one’s explained how the fence in, on, 125 feet in from the river is more of a hindrance than the 1200 miles of the Rio Grande itself.

A road along the river would be the equivalent of a “no man’s land,” without the lost access to Texan landowners and patrols along the road would be more efficacious than the fence with out patrols or with the few and far between patrols we have.

We’ve got to have federal agents who are allowed to do what it takes to stop the invaders. We haven’t had those.

The State of Texas has been doing what we can with Rangers and DPS agents, guns, autos, planes and helicopters, with some virtual fencing. Our citizens volunteer for patrol on the border and even along the highways going up through Texas. Those professionals and volunteers actually apprehend quite a few, but then wait hours for the Feds to show up.

But then, the Feds - when they finally get there - “catch and release.”

Mr Cain thinks his words are above scrutiny.

He has just opened the entire party up do savage criticism for saying “YOU WILL BE KILLED” over an international economic matter.

“Because it is the law in the state of Texas and he upholds the law.”

When did I want him to NOT enforce the law. I only want him to say it’s a mistake...and even that’s too much for him (and it cost him the nomination).

“It’s the treaties in place. There would be far reaching consequences if broken.

I know one thing, this issue has brought out the lunatic fringe of the party.”

PLEASE name the treaty that prohibits a wall on US territory. But, I guess by your second sentence, you’re basically finished as far as being able to make a credible argument on this thread.
