Alternate headline: Republicans really, really, really dont want to nominate Mitt Romney.
Strong Tea Party support has Cain in the drivers seat nationally, just as he has been on our last four individual state polls. With non-Tea Party Republicans Romney actually leads Cain 29-27. But with the Tea Party crowd Cain is getting 39% with Gingrich at 16%, Perry at 14%, and Romney in 4th place at 13%. Romney doesnt need to win the Tea Partiers to be the Republican nominee. But he does need to finish better than 4th with them.
There are indications within the poll that Cains stay at the top could be short lived. Only 30% of his supporters are solidly committed to him with 70% saying they might still go on to support someone else. Those numbers arent much better for Romney, who only has 31% of his supporters solidly committed, or Gingrich, who only has 34% solidly committed. The strongest base of support among the Republican front runners- even if its shrinking- is Perrys- 48% of his remaining backers say theyll definitely vote for him. Overall 70% of Republicans are either undecided right now or open to voting for someone different than who theyre with now- that signals an extremely wide open race
If the race came down to a two way match between Cain and Romney, Cain leads 48-36. Cain would pick up Bachmann, Gingrich, Perry, and Santorums supporters. Romney would get Huntsman and Pauls. Cain would absolutely crush Perry in a head to head, 55-27.

I agree that we should work to simplify existing code.
I think even that is an uphill battle.
Once the IRS is entrenched they are hard to pare back.
Obama hired what? 160,000 new agents to enforce mandatory Obama care via our tax returns?
Good luck getting rid of them once they become part of the system.
I don’t want national sales tax added, I don’t want VAT added.
I say lets focus on repealing what we’ve got.
You're also not paying 15% payroll taxes.
Do the math and tell me it's not a net benefit.
And How the F does he intend to do it?
Call on the “Super Committee”?
Sounds like an oversight in the 999 plan that Cain will need to fix. Like all such plans, his will undergo lots of refinement, alterations, and rejiggering before it becomes a bill in Congress.
Where Cain is on the mark with this, is that it re-writes the rules so that everyone has some skin in the game, and takes away the politician's power to reward their friends and punish their enemies through the power to tax.
That is what is fundamentally right and liberating about it. The details can always be improved upon, as it progresses through the legislative process.
Sorry, to clarify, dividends are presently double taxed. Under Cains plan they are not.
“Under my 999 plan we have a plan that is easy for everyone to understand”
There are more Republican Tea Partiers than meet the eye and they vote!
I find it interesting that Paul’s loonies would go to a big Gov’t Progressive like Milt. It just shows what a bunch of closet leftists they all are.

If you believe it. I don’t. Libertarians for Romney. I don’t think so.
Do you suffer from short-term memory loss? You just asked that question upthread, and I answered you at post 99.
Another vague answer that is not outlined in Cains plan.
Mr Cain has shown no knowledge of political process.
Here is a clue folks.
Under my 999 plan we have a plan that is easy for everyone to understand
Is not going to resonate with the black vote.
It doesn’t resonate with an increasing amount of the “I want to prove I aint racist vote”
It doesn’t wash with the “lets look at the facts vote”
I like Herman Cain, but he is showboating big time, and he obfuscated questions with shizzle last night.
Gingrich’s name goes in front.
Herman ducked and weaved admirably, But last night was a lot of bluster.
I admire his life story, but last night was a lot of bluster.
This, er, “ducking and weaving” must be inspiring some folks. Look at the polls.
It is, but it is obfuscation.
Watch the debate.
And watch Ron Pauls slippery Eyebrow. LoL
My Herman Caine bumper sticker will read CAINE FOR PRESIDENT.. WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE IS BLACK ???
Oh, for cryin out loud. I give up. Good night.
Watch the debate
