WASHINGTON—U.S. authorities said Tuesday they had charged two men in an Iranian-directed plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the U.S.
The alleged assassination plot would represent an escalation in the confrontation between mostly Shiite Iran and mostly Sunni Saudi Arabia, two longtime Middle East rivals. The charges are also a rare instance of Washington accusing Iranian groups of fomenting terrorism on U.S. soil.
Elements of the Iranian government were ready to spend $1.5 million to hire what they believed was a drug-cartel hit squad from Mexico, said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
Prosecutors filed several criminal charges against Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who holds Iranian and U.S. passports, and Gholam Shakuri, described as a member of a special-operations unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Mr. Holder said Mr. Arbabsiar and his Iran-based co-conspirators had been plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador since the spring.

Legally, it was an attempted act of war by Iran against the Saudis. But given that the host nation —us— is responsible for the security of the Saudi Embassy and their staff while in our country, we are in the middle.
This is the BS price we pay for interjecting ourselves into lunatic ME Muslim politics — risking the lives of ordinary Americans to protect the creepy Saudis. It’s a no win scenario.

As others have said I question the timing of this announcement.
Holder wants a medal for doing his job (for once).
The bombing would have killed Americans. And a full war between Wahabbist Saudi’s vs Shi Islamist Iranians may have benefits, but it would also cause a huge oil shock. Hello $200/barrel. Moreover, Islamists other than the Saudi regime would blame Israel.

I’m very cynical of anything that this administration claims, just as I was with the last administration. Diversion, deflection and hood winking is the MO. Interested parties would like the USA blowing its last wad on another war, this time in Iran. Don’t drink the kool aid.
The plot is real and it made news today to save Holder and prevent war with Iran. Right now, there are no dead Americans or Saudis, so this can be swept under the rug with a new round of sanctions on Iran. Soon enough Russia and China will break the sanctions.
