The new, ugly debate about Mitt Romney's Mormon faith will only push him closer to the nomination
The Telegraph ^ | October 10th, 2011 | Tim Stanley

"...It probably irks Mitt to have to discuss his faith in this way, but the Mormon debate could be of net benefit to his campaign.

...True, there is a small but significant minority who say they would never vote for a Mormon. According to Gallup, it’s around 22 percent of the population. But opposition to Mormonism doesn’t come from conservative Evangelicals or Catholics. On the contrary, Gallup’s polls show that it’s a liberal thing. Only 7 percent of Baptists and Catholics wouldn’t vote for a Mormon, compared with 32 percent of gays and 49 percent of atheists. Amusingly, the figure is also much, much higher among Mormons, at 22 percent. That’s right, 22 percent of Mormons would never vote for a Mormon. Perhaps they know something we don’t."

I believe what began as a cult has changed for the better.

Please provide sources for that statement. The practices and doctrines of the mormon church have not changed since 1978 when blacks were finally allowed into their temples.

I was born and raised mormon, and I can testify that individually there are as many mormon liars, thieves, drunks, dope addicts and pedophiles and in particular con men as there are in any other religion...I witnessed this firsthand. It's imperative to them to put up a good "front" for the outside world.

I warn those who are so fond of their mormon neighbors and friends that until and unless you become one of them, you will never be seen by them as "worthy" of salvation, and they feel that they are "special" and you are not. They play the victim card, as they are today as a means to proselytize at the same time claiming that God removed His Gospel from the earth for centuries, only to "restore" it to a con man.

Mormonism is anti-Christian.

I was once a Mormon. It is certainly not what most Christians would call Christian, and the only thing Joseph Smith used seductive words for was to seduce. Joseph Smith was evil, and God can use evil for good - but that certainly doesn’t mean we are to give evil the credit!

Well if you believe that holy underwear will help you avoid sin then Romney may well be your candidate.

MY point exactly. The media having shown a complete lack of interest in the candidates’ religions will decide that they must be dogged in the pursuit of just what beliefs would inform a Romney presidency. Those ignorant freepers who claim that Mormonism is off limits will then discover how it will become like leprosy.

You have hit the nail squarely. With Romney the Republican pick running against Obama, the two of them will be laughing behind closed doors at how they screwed over the American people again leaving us a choice of progressive #1 or progressive #2.

I think that the Romney campaign is making hay out of the "poor persecuted mormons" card, but Perry has just come out with this ad which is devastating.

“God uses the Mormon faith for his glory.”

Sure! Just like he used Pharoah...

“When will someone ask Mitt Romney if the Mormon church ever taught that all other churches are apostate?”

Every other Christian denomination I can think of believes that THEIR brand of Christianity is the one true way. While we are discussing whether we Mormons are Christian, Christians are being slaughtered all over the world for belief in Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Now, I have a question for you: Are Jews and Catholics, not to mention all the other faiths with which you disagree, also going to hell along with all us Mormons?

I’m begining to wonder if this isn’t all hopeless. The decision has been made and we are stuck with Romney.

Nonsense question. Americans respect the right to conscience. Every mind is free to choose its beliefs. Why be Catholic, Lutheran or Russia Orthodox? Because you choose to.

We live in a country that is free of religious strife. Look around the world and see the curse of religious conflict, take a gander at relatively recent European history. Would you rather go back to that? Our Founders did not and for that reason there is no religious standard for elected office in America. Atheists can even be elected.

That is the point, the point of America. We’re unique, different and exceptional.

Now, I have a question for you: Are Jews and Catholics, not to mention all the other faiths with which you disagree, also going to hell along with all us Mormons?

I have a Q for you, Saundra...(SHF, I suggest you not answer her Q unless she answers this one):

I have an index of your "scriptures" Saundra published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Here's what the unique "scriptures" that Saundra believes in teaches:

"O the wise, and the learned and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts, and all those who preach false doctrines, and all those who commit whoredoms, and pervert the right way of the Lord, wo, wo, wo be unto them...for they shall be thrust down into hell." (2 Nephi 28:15, Book of Mormon)

Do you believe Saundra that those whom Mormon leaders consider to be teaching "false doctrines" will "be thrust down into hell." Yes? No?

The Lds index adds these summaries from another chapter in the Book of Mormon, the eighth chapter of Moroni. On p. 367, it says: he who is cut off in thoughts of baptism for little children MUST go down to hell." AND on p. 371: "Moro. 8:20-21 he who says little children need baptism is in danger of endless torment."

Tell us, Saundra, since Roman Catholics teach baptism is for little children -- and so do some Protestants (Lutherans, for example) -- do you believe they "MUST go down to hell" as the Book of Mormon teaches in Moroni 8:14?

Joseph Smith said it would be "more tolerable for heathen in judgment than for those who reject elders." (Lds Doctrine & Covenants 45:54)

So, because we reject Mormon elders, Saundra, you think it's going to be more tolerable in the spirit world than for the heathen? Yes? No?

Btw, Saundra, the Book of Mormon teaches there is a "misery that never dies" (Mormon 8:38)...so think about that in conjunction with even the Mormon version of hell and outer darkness.

2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

http://lds.org/library/display/0%2C4945%2C106-1-2-1%2CFF.html

Latter-Day Saints reject original sin. It’s actually refreshing because if original sin is true, then how can we charge or convict pedophiles if children are sinful little creatures themselves?

Why don’t you start a thread (open) on the Religion Forum on this statement and ping me to it. If you’re truly interested in further light and knowledge.
