Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann dodged questions Sunday whether Romney is a Christian. The issue arose during the just-completed Values Voters Summit in Washington, exposing tensions among evangelicals over Romney's religious faith, as we reported today. Dallas Baptist pastor Robert Jeffress kicked things off by endorsing Rick Perry and declaring that Mormonism is a cult and Romney is not a Christian.
Speakers went back and forth on the issue -- and Romney himself weighed in, denouncing "poisonous speech" that doesn't help the nominating process. Asked about Jeffress' comments, Perry said he doesn't believe Mormonism is a cult.

They saying it’s not suitable for them to discuss in the context of a race for national office? Good for them. They are avoiding an obvious trap.
The real problem is that neither will identify him for what he IS - a dissembling liberal.

There are millions of evangelical voters who will not pull the lever in a general election for Romney.
Which is why the MSM continues to put his face out there as the front-runner.

The Dems strategy is precisely to “divide and conquer” and knock out viable candidates in the primary, then Obama will have a cake walk — and the Republicans are obligingly falling into that trap, forming a circular firing squad.

The issue is irrelevant and any candidate would be a fool to even entertain the question. Of course, if Romney’s religion advocated the submission/destruction of infidels, that would be another matter.

I watched Herman in this interview, and he said he was not going to get into a religious discussion. He was running for president, not to be the theologian-in-chief. There were too many other important issues. He wasn’t going to waste his time discussing differences in Theology. Perfect answer to Candy’s loaded question.
The Perry supporters on FR are using the exact same talking points that liberals are using on other political forums as well as Facebook. Interesting, huh?
If Mitt had also been the one to complain about Perry’s seeming ease around a hunting ground officially named for a flower that was in turn named for a racial slur, then he would deserve all the catcalls of “hypocrite” that could be mustered. But of all Mitt’s faults in the last 25 years or so, racism seems to be absent. If anything, voices like his were probably the reason the LDS officially abandoned racism.
How many mainstream evangelical Christians of good conscience go to Southern Baptist churches, who for the virtues of their general theology bought into the “Ham-is-cursed” nonsense about Negroes, thought slavery had been an OK means of evangelism, and didn’t formally disavow that until recently?
I mean, I disagree quite a lot with LDS and think their theology weirds out America for good reason. But racism isn’t in their book of faults any more, neither is it Mitt’s.
Agreed. But I see Bachman attacking RINO Romney on the Christian issue is not going to be as effective as simply attacking him on his many flip-flops.
It matters to me. I WILL NOT VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE JESUS CHRIST IS GOD THE SON! “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” (Matt 7:16). Mormons are NOT Christians.
And I'm wondering if they DID make public speeches on the national stage about the same sorts of things, how would the evangelical community respond? I have a hunch not well.
So please someone, tell this agnostic conservative, where in the hell does a evangelical mega-church pastor get off telling people on a national stage which candidate is holy enough to vote for and which candidate is going to hell? That is so arrogant.
He may think he's speaking for God, but if he is, he and his God can go pound sand.
Theology aside, I think the rectitude of the Mormons is admirable.

My views on the matter of Mormom history, theology, and identity as Christian would most certainly anger a lot of Mormons, but the subject is not germane to presidential politics.
The Democrats are playing “Let’s you and him fight.”
But, is it because he is a Mormon or because of his stand on issues (or previous political stances and votes)? I suggest that for many it is the later. And I think the Mormon issue is MOSTLY being driven by the left. If he were a rock solid small government conservative I would support him.

Oh I beg to differ, it's just as relevant today as asking how Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years. I need to know if my president believes in magical underpants. It is a fair question.
