Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann dodged questions Sunday whether Romney is a Christian. The issue arose during the just-completed Values Voters Summit in Washington, exposing tensions among evangelicals over Romney's religious faith, as we reported today. Dallas Baptist pastor Robert Jeffress kicked things off by endorsing Rick Perry and declaring that Mormonism is a cult and Romney is not a Christian.
Speakers went back and forth on the issue -- and Romney himself weighed in, denouncing "poisonous speech" that doesn't help the nominating process. Asked about Jeffress' comments, Perry said he doesn't believe Mormonism is a cult.

I’m nowhere near evangelical. I don’t claim to be “born again.” I don’t believe that God would ever throw anyone into a pit of fire. I believe that Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and even Muslims can go to heaven, even if they don’t “accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.”
But I am a Christian, whether you believe it or not.

You may believe you are a Christian, but your belief (universalism) isn’t Biblical. Sorry.
Then the Bible is either misinterpreted or wrong, as is often the case with the writings of men.
But I am a Christian, whether you believe it or not.
I'm sure you think you are.
Could you tell us why you think this way?
If you are correct; why should we value your opinion; as it, too, comes from man.
Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.
Not sure why anyone calls Romney a Republican..? He’s solidly a democrat and not even a moderate Dem!
So you claim to be a Christian, but believe the Bible is the ‘writings of men’ and wrong.
Then why do you think you are a Christian?
What did Jesus mean when He said “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by me”?
Was He lying? Or just wrong?
Like many Christians, I interpret that phrase symbolically.

No, Christians do not interpret that symbolically, it is either true or not. Either Christ was who He said He was, or He was a liar.
Only people who pretend to be Christians deny the Bible and believe in Universalism.
If Christ isn’t the only way, then why on earth would you claim to be a Christian?
“I have to ask what does this have to do with the price of tea in China?”
Exactly. I’m not for Romney, but not for religious regions. People need to STFU about the religious aspect of our candidate. Give me an atheist who will follow the Constitution 100% over someone who expounds about his/her religion. The extreme emphasis on the religious issue will be our downfall. The nit-pickey back-and-forth blathering among the candidates about who is or isn’t a “Christian” is pathetic and embarrassing. If the Constitution is honored, then all of our religions will be safe.
Carter and Clinton would be called “Christians”, and where did that get us? IIRC, many of the Founding Fathers were Deists, and it seems they did a pretty good job.
Christ did not write the Bible and everything you said is wrong. And fortunately, there are no Christian Police; only Christian Police wannabees.
Hey, honest to God.. I don't give a $hit
Nothing I said is wrong. And I still don’t know why you claim to be a Christian when you deny everything about Christ.
Where did I say Christ WROTE the Bible? It is the word of God, given through inspired men.
In short, liberal ‘Christians’ aren’t really Christians at all, they just sometimes ‘play church’. But, hey, thanks for outing yourself.
When I need your further opinion on these matters I’ll give it to you.
Wow. No wonder you have the lack of theology you do. And no one tells me what to do. :)
One thing I hate more than heretics are liberals who pretend to be Christians.
I’m laughing in your general direction—your use of the word “heretic” was a nice touch and a dead giveaway.
Dead giveaway of what? However, you are in the same camp as the Mormons, not Christian.
And you still haven’t answered why you even want to be considered one? I’m also willing to bet you are a political liberal and thus a troll.
Let me guess, Romeny’s your man?
I will stop chuckling at you long enough to recommend Richard Rohr’s book, Falling Upward. It offers a vision of Christianity quite at odds with yours.
