"The Book of Mormon" debuted this year as a Broadway hit that won nine Tonys, and the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nomination features not one, but two candidates of the Mormon faith.
Now the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is launching a major expansion of its "I'm a Mormon" advertising campaign, which, church officials say, seeks to educate the public and dispel myths about one of the fastest-growing religions in the world.
Beginning this week, a dozen U.S. cities in seven states will be targeted by the Salt Lake City-based church with ads on television, city buses and billboards inviting visitors to the church's website to learn about its beliefs and followers.
Users who log onto mormon.org can see profiles of Mormons from various walks of life, chat with church members and learn about Mormon practices, such as the prohibition against consuming alcohol, coffee and tea.
"Many people are not familiar with our faith, and that can sometimes lead to misconceptions," said David Evans, an elder who oversees the church's global network of 52,000 missionaries. "The best way to understand Mormons is to meet them and get to know them personally. These ads are an invitation to do that."
The church, boasting a membership of 14 million worldwide, including 6 million U.S. followers, has gained new attention in the American mainstream this year from Broadway to the White House campaign trail.
Public opinion polls in recent years have shown large blocs of Americans hold an unfavorable view of the religion, whose image problems are partly rooted in the faith's historical connection with polygamy.
An early tenant of the Mormon faith, plural marriage was renounced by the church more than a century ago, although it is still practiced by members of some breakaway sects.

The book of Mormon was written by a fellow who was likely hallucinatng, poor guy. Joseph Smith even likened himself to Mohammad, Count. Romney is like a 32nd degree Mason. He knows what it is all about because he is a Temple Mormon. Until the members of the organization reach that level, they know nothing. I have friends who are Mormons. They are generally a very sweet people. But they are so terribly misled!
I think Jesus would say the same thing. He came to teach the Jews they were errant in their concept of the Holy Father. God loved us so much he sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins, to pay the price so we have everlasting life with Him clean as snow from our sins.
I’ve read the BOM twice, with pens and markers to take notes and highlight stuff.
Second time through, I marked all of the word for word extractions from the KJV, including the italicized words, which did not exist until the 1600’s.
I also have the 1830 edition, before the 3913 changes, not including spelling and punctuation.

You now, in all the years I’ve studied Mormon history and theology, there’s one very simple yet fundamental question that’s never occured to me until now (insert Homer Simpson moment here). I would genuinely like to hear the response of an LDS member to the following:
I know that many “plain and precious things” are believed by LDS to have been lost from the Bible prior to the establishment of your church. Since D&C/Pearl of Great Price are regarded as new revelations and/or supplemental historical material, then what “plain and precious things” were restored within the Book of Mormon if it does contain the “fullness of the gospel”?
“No religion that denies the Book of Mormon can be true. Jesus Christ brought forth this book. You are rejecting something you don’t understand.”
I gagged my way though the book or morons to see what all of the folks around me in SE Idaho were so excited about.
Jesus Christ and joe smith have absolutely NOTHING in common. The former was the Son of God, the latter was a con-man and a philanderer. Lil’ joe’s followers have been conned in to a cult and the men WISH they could still be philanderers (and many of them are).
Please don’t get your magic underwear in a knot reading what I have posted. Facts are facts. Deal with it.
The ads say nothing about their faith...they simply try to portray ordinary people as Mormons. The content of their faith is totally absent...pointless.
In other words, the ad campaign is a bait and switch scam.

Click the link below to read one of these ads. Note that it is all about "the church". Jeff is thrilled and honored to be a member, and as an afterthought says, "I am a devout Christian"...yet the only mention of Jesus Christ in this testimony is in the name of the church.

I’m a Christian and you are Christian. A distinctly closed society as noted by the possessive and objectified form of describing yourself in a manner that plagiarizes and attempts to co-opt the larger body of Christ.

On an agreement with a friend, my wife read the BoM, and read much of it aloud to me. I have to tell you that I have NEVER heard such a contrived effort, or such a feeble attempt at imitating Elizabethan English except in the company of a band of half-drunk Renaissance Faire visitors. About the only places the Book of Mormon sounds authentic at all, are where portions are lifted almost verbatim from the King James Bible.
The author REALLY would have been FAR MORE convincing had he stuck to the American English of his own era. As it is, the whole thing just comes off as a sham.
You are rejecting something you don’t understand.
If there is any misunderstanding, at all, I'd lay the blame squarely on the aforementioned linguistic failure. Where the text is decipherable, it is clearly hogwash; it conflicts with the earlier revelations (old and new testaments) in fundamental, irreconcilable ways. Either the Bible is true or the Book of Mormon is true; BOTH cannot be true, and based on the farcical nature of the language used in the BoM, and with eternal life and death on the line, I'll side with the Bible.
