Matt Lewis says he’s improving on this issue. I guess, but that’s mainly because after you’ve tried to win over voters by calling them heartless, there’s really nowhere to go but up. A scene from New Hampshire this morning:
“We have, for decades, had a federal government that has absolutely failed in its constitutional duty to defend our border,” Perry said.
“I’m a governor. I don’t have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing. I have to deal with these issues,” he later added.
Perry continued, “In 2001, we had this choice: Are we going to kick these children over to the curb and say you cannot have access to college? Because the fact of the matter is there’s no way they could pay the out-of-state tuition. And are we going to have them on the government dole over here because they’re not educated? Or are we going to have them in our institutions of higher learning, paying in state tuition, pursuing citizenship?”…
David Connors, the man who asked Perry the in-state tuition question, said he was satisfied with the governor’s answer.
Really? There are no jobs for illegals anywhere in Texas to earn tuition money? I was under the impression that there are quite a lot of jobs available to them, especially since Perry opposes e-Verify. This is the same sleight of hand he tried to use in the debate answer that got him in trouble, equating illegals’ opportunity to go to school in Texas with some sort of moral imperative among taxpayers to subsidize their education. (His wife, campaigning for him in Iowa, framed the choice as between tuition subsidies or welfare.) Somehow, the impoverished U.S. citizen from Mississippi is expected to pay his own way in Austin but the illegal who’s lived in Texas for three years gets a stipend from the locals. And not just in terms of lower tuition rates; apparently they qualify for financial aid too. It must be awfully confusing for Perry, as a “Texas Gaullist” and vocal champion of state sovereignty, to find that prioritizing state residency over national citizenship doesn’t play well with grassroots conservatives outside of Texas itself, but he’d better find clarity soon.
Here’s Romney’s new ad bludgeoning Perry with praise he once received from former Mexican President Vicente Fox. After you watch, read this amusing scolding (which notes some of Mitt’s own immigration heresies) from former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, who seems genuinely surprised that Romney would pander so shamelessly on a divisive issue simply to destroy an opponent. That was the old, soulless Romney. The new, soulful Romney should be above that sort of thing. Right?
BTW, less than 1000 students this year attended Texas A&M and University of Texas on this program. The other 15,000 attended junior colleges and community colleges. See this.
Stick a fork in Perry. It’s one thing to have a soft spot or to be weak on an important issue but this is ridiculous. Really, Cain becomes the only real alternative.

Your answer: “Hell yeah, that’s exactly what needs to be done. In fact, when you find the little bastards trying to steal money from the American people, you arrest and deport them and their parents back to where they came from.”
Good night! This cannot go on in the United States of America! How dare these odious Mexican kids who think they can get away with murder! Any act as offensive, outrageous and terrible by sneaking into the United States is worse than murder! They all have to be juvenile delinquents. They are nothing but reprobate scum who sneak out of their homes in Mexico while their parents are sleeping and illegally cross our border to party in the United States. It is these kids who are drunk in our streets and committing all kinds of crimes. Their Mexican ooze stinks to high heaven and their spawn spells the end of the Human Race.
For this reason, I have a modest proposal:
The ultimate answer to these illegal juvenile delinquents is that any dark skinned Mexican looking kid will have to prove they are a legal U.S. citizen to receive a government issue food purchasing card. Only kids who qualify for the card will be able to purchase food. Those without the card, will not be able to buy food. Any store selling food to these illegal kids will be committing a felony and subject to fines and imprisonment.
Any Mexican kid who sneaks into the United States should not have the ability to get an education or eat.
I am thinking of a way to restrict their ability to breath and after more time for study, I will give my recommendation. Any Mexican kid who sneaks into the United States should not have the ability to get an education, eat or breathe.
I say that when these illegal Mexican kids cannot buy food without a food purchasing card, there will be kids dying from starvation. Too bad, too sad for them. Their starvation would be the consequence for not going back home where they belong with their parents. And because Mexicans should be worth more dead than alive, this is more of my Modest Proposal:

Several states — Texas, California, New York, Utah, Illinois, Washington, Nebraska, New Mexico, Maryland (community colleges), Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Kansas — have passed state laws providing in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens who have attended high school in the state for three or more years. Similar legislation is pending in Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. (Connecticut also passed such a law, but the governor vetoed it.) The Nevada system of higher education does not consider immigration status for in-state tuition, but does require it for a state-sponsored scholarship. Also, some schools in Georgia provide in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens. The Texas law also allows illegal aliens to receive state student financial aid.
These state laws attempt to circumvent the federal law by simply not asking students whether they are in the US legally. (The California law, AB 540, requires the student to file an affidavit that he/she has filed an application to legalize his/her immigration status or intends to file an application as soon as he/she is eligible to do so. So California doesn’t even attempt to maintain the fiction that the school is unaware of the student’s immigration status.) They also circumvent the law by basing eligibility for in-state tuition on attendance at or graduation from an in-state high school and not on state residence.
Subsection 8 USC 1621(d) permits states to provide illegal aliens with state and local public benefits provided that a state law is enacted after August 22, 1996 specifically permitting illegal aliens to receive such benefits. However, this subsection makes a potentially limiting reference to subsection 1621(a) and so does not override the restrictions in 8 USC 1623(a). As such, it would appear that the state laws permitting in-state tuition to illegal aliens are not permitted by the federal law.
No sarcasm. If an illegal brought a child to the US and the child grew up here going to school and then collage give them instate tuition. It would be cruel to send the person back to where their parents came from. I was the governments fault for not keeping the parents out.

Sending illegals back isn't cruel. Hard, yes. Inconvenient, yes. But cruel? ... No.
Our nation is $14.6 TRILLION in debt and adding $1.6 TRILLION to that every year.
In state tuition amounts to a subsidy. Subsidies are paid by taxes. Taxes paid by hard working Americans, so THEIR kids can go to school. Unemployment is at about 16%. There are about 160 million people in the labor force, with about 26 million unemployed. There are about 20 million illegals in this country. You do the math.
Being that unemployment is at 16% either a heavier tax burden gets passed on to those who ARE working, or the subsidies for education get tacked on to debt.
Illegals are more likely to use food stamps. Use public assisted housing. Use public assisted utilities. Go to the ER for any and every scrape cut or sniffle, because they will be treated and won't have to pay.
ALL THIS ON THE TAX PAYERS DIME.
Meanwhile OUR taxes go up, to pay for all this, meaning it gets harder and harder for Americans to live and MAYBE put THEIR OWN kids through college, and you think its CRUEL, if we should send anyone back to their third world country, when they DON'T LEGALLY have any RIGHT in ours.
How about the "cruelty" to those who came here legally, and did EVERYTHING asked of them, to become US citizens, who now have to pay out of state fees, while the criminal gets subsidized???
So, these high school graduates go to college just like any graduate of Texas high schools do. Anyone who understands that is no moron.
I was against the amnesty in 1986 and in 1991 I was threatened by officials in an employment office for EOT cause I questioned papers of their client so I filled out the I9 and quit caring about Illegals. So if the Government don’t do their job then illegals who came here can claim squatters right or give them amnesty or what ever you want to call it. But the children who grew up here should be given a easy path to be legal. The government needs to do its job but they don’t.

The balance, of course, is paid by honest, legal taxpayers. Where else does Perry think the money comes from? This guy is really beginning to scare me.

I am sure these children of illegal parents (that is parents that crossed the U.S. border illegally with their children) do pay for their college education with their own money. I hope you are not confused about what it means to pay in-state tuition rates. In my state your tuition costs are much lower than what an out-of-state student will pay. For students in our state it is a double-edged sword. Yes, our students pay reduced rate tuitions. However, the colleges limit the number of our students in favor of the increased money they can get from out-of-state students. Only exceptional in-state residency students get admitted. I am sure this happens in other states. So, in-state students of whatever race must be exceptional students if they get admitted to college. So why penalize these exceptional students because they happened to be children of parents who did the wrong thing? There is no situation in our culture where we punish children because their parents did the wrong thing. In fact, if the parents are bad enough, we take the children away from them and put them in foster homes. We are a people who believe in fairness.

So there are some scholarships available. As for loans, the Citibank Loan link on that page is broken. The Sallie Mae link works, but I don't know whether or not Sallie Mae provides student loans to illegals.
Especially when they parade and give the finger to the camera's and grab their crotch...They are not illegals they are an invasion and its not just mexicans that come across the southern border, its also terrorist, narc-terrorists and gang bangers....Some people in this country are just plain nutz....One of the biggest is the governor of Texas along with the idiot democrat female governor from a state I forgot that wants to suspect the next election cause democrats might lose congress....
If these people thought they could get away with it, conservatives would be in gulags and I am damn serious about that....
Not only do they get in-state tuition, they can qualify for state aid.
