Matt Lewis says he’s improving on this issue. I guess, but that’s mainly because after you’ve tried to win over voters by calling them heartless, there’s really nowhere to go but up. A scene from New Hampshire this morning:
“We have, for decades, had a federal government that has absolutely failed in its constitutional duty to defend our border,” Perry said.
“I’m a governor. I don’t have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing. I have to deal with these issues,” he later added.
Perry continued, “In 2001, we had this choice: Are we going to kick these children over to the curb and say you cannot have access to college? Because the fact of the matter is there’s no way they could pay the out-of-state tuition. And are we going to have them on the government dole over here because they’re not educated? Or are we going to have them in our institutions of higher learning, paying in state tuition, pursuing citizenship?”…
David Connors, the man who asked Perry the in-state tuition question, said he was satisfied with the governor’s answer.
Really? There are no jobs for illegals anywhere in Texas to earn tuition money? I was under the impression that there are quite a lot of jobs available to them, especially since Perry opposes e-Verify. This is the same sleight of hand he tried to use in the debate answer that got him in trouble, equating illegals’ opportunity to go to school in Texas with some sort of moral imperative among taxpayers to subsidize their education. (His wife, campaigning for him in Iowa, framed the choice as between tuition subsidies or welfare.) Somehow, the impoverished U.S. citizen from Mississippi is expected to pay his own way in Austin but the illegal who’s lived in Texas for three years gets a stipend from the locals. And not just in terms of lower tuition rates; apparently they qualify for financial aid too. It must be awfully confusing for Perry, as a “Texas Gaullist” and vocal champion of state sovereignty, to find that prioritizing state residency over national citizenship doesn’t play well with grassroots conservatives outside of Texas itself, but he’d better find clarity soon.
Here’s Romney’s new ad bludgeoning Perry with praise he once received from former Mexican President Vicente Fox. After you watch, read this amusing scolding (which notes some of Mitt’s own immigration heresies) from former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, who seems genuinely surprised that Romney would pander so shamelessly on a divisive issue simply to destroy an opponent. That was the old, soulless Romney. The new, soulful Romney should be above that sort of thing. Right?
What part of working for your education and paying for it does this dweeb not understand? I had to pay for it.. my daughter had to pay for hers and I have no problem with that. Go for a scholarship or two. There are scholarships that go wanting for applicants, believe me. If you are worthy you will receive it, but don’t quit your side job if you want to stay in school. Work for it. Work for it.... I am amazed why so many feel it should be GIVEN as a GIFT to those who have broken our laws.

A native born American residing in Texas committed no crimes, is here legally, pays taxes AND pays more to attend the same school as the ILLEGAL ALIEN?--------If ILLEGAL ALIENS are not here with the permission of the Federal government, they should get no benefits and be deported swiftly. Mexico doesn’t educate those in their country illegally.......they are jailed and deported.

Illegals get student loans to pay for college tuition via the federal government under Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Anyone can apply.......as many times as possible (using forged Social Security numbers and other fake documents. No word on illegals' loan default rate. Gov Ricky won't tell, that's for sure.)
Apparently, TX doesn’t require US citizenship to achieve state residency. Then the tuition debate boils down to a legal residency debate........a non-US resident should not be able to obtain state citizenship anywhere until they are a legal US citizen. Subsidized in-state college tuition should require legal citizenship of both the Nation and the state because the fed/govt subsidizes the tuition....... this is in every tax-paying citizen’s interest.
Was this part of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623(a)) repealed?

Specifically, Section 505 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623(a)) states: “an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State (or a political subdivision) for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident.”
States can’t deport anyone. The Feds won’t.
The feds even perverted the Section 287 (g) regulations that allow local Law enforcement to be “deputized” to identify and detain illegals for deportation. The new, Obama regulations require the locals to prosecute illegals on all charges before verification for deportation and only allow this for “major crimes.”

Texas took the illegal students in elementary and high school all the way to the Supreme Court. We fight for border control every day, spend millions of our own tax money to supplement the border security and even try to use our own law enforcement to deport convicted criminals. Even that last requires cooperation from the Feds, and we can’t be sure that the criminals are deported or whether, as in the past, they’re just released into Texas.

So how do illegals pay for their tuition? Federal law is that employers are not allow to hire undocumented illegals. So will you too claim these illegals cannot receive student loans or scholarships? NOW given the set up by Perry in Texas, how does he plan to enforce FEDERAL law as president.
Attempted enrollment by an illegal alien is not an event that should trigger a subsidy. It is an event that should prompt a deportation.
If I’m not mistaken, they’re not getting FREE tuition, they’re getting in-state tuition. They still have to pay that in-state tuition. On another thread it was noted that the ‘state schools’ where they enjoy this benefit are mostly 2 year community colleges, and the savings is under $2k/year.
The article sets up a false argument that a student from MS who wants to go to UT-Austin would have to pay out-of-state tuition. The argument leaves out that the MS Student could go to Ole Miss or any community college in NS and pay in-state tuition.
Every state in the union has its own colleges/universities with in-state tuition. TX and some other states have chosen one route; other states, such as VA, have chosen another path.
Why isn’t this a states right issue? And why can’t folks accept that TX made its choice, and just leave it at that?
Perry is a globalist politician and we can expect nothing from him except the same laimbrained responses he has given thus far. I’m really beginning to believe the guy isn’t very smart as some might believe he is....and might be why he has been doing so badly in the debates. He simply doesn’t have the “it” on his feet, which certainly a President needs to have.
It would seem a good excuse for Perry not being very smart would be to say he doesn’t do debates well...which is what many are using to justify his poor responses. Could be he just isn’t very smart.
In state tuition is not cheap in Nebraska just cheaper then out of state tuition. I think that foreign students ought to get a work permit and be allowed to work pay taxes and get instate tuition after one year of satisfactory performance. As far as the children of illegal give them in state tuition too. They were brought to the US and in most cases it would be cruel to return them to where they came from.
From what I have read, E-Verify is used for state government jobs in Texas, but not mandated for Texas private sector employers to use. I cannot figure out the reason Perry is opposed to it specifically. Although I have run across some articles claiming that E-Verify is 3% in error (or 97% correct), meaning that it could invalidate the I-9 of 3% of applicants using the system in error.
I was hired by Robert Half for a temp job last year in Texas and had to submit to some sort of citizenship check. Not sure if they used E-Verify or not. It was a pain in the ass.
