Woman says she killed estranged boyfriend in self-defense(OH)

The woman’s hands were shaking, but she spoke in a calm voice as she stood outside the Far East Side apartment where 27-year-old Quentin L. Walker was shot and killed early yesterday.

“I’m the one who this happened to,” she said, identifying herself only as Ashley.

She said that Walker, her estranged boyfriend and the father of her two children, broke into her apartment in the middle of the night and came at her with a crowbar in his hand.

She shot and killed him, using the gun she’d bought this year, Ashley said. She had feared that the protection order that was supposed to keep him away from her and their 7-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter would not be enough.

Ashley said police took her Downtown for questioning and, after she told her story, brought her home to her apartment at 371 Heatherbridge Lane in the Stonebridge Apartments.

“It was self-defense,” she said, adding that Walker had a history of violence. “I’m glad that I’m here.”

Columbus police were called to the apartment about 4:30 a.m. yesterday, and Walker was pronounced dead 10 minutes later. Ashley said her children were not home at the time.

Detectives were not available yesterday to discuss the shooting. A news release said the case will be presented to a grand jury.

Franklin County court records show that a domestic-violence protection order was issued on March 3 instructing Walker to keep away from Ashley Powell, now 27, and her two children.

In April, Walker pleaded guilty to felony counts of abduction and receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor count of domestic violence, according to court documents. He also had been charged with a felony count of kidnapping.

In June, Common Pleas Judge Mark Serrott sentenced Walker to six months in jail and three years of community control, similar to probation. He was to enroll in violence and anger-management counseling and have no contact with Powell or their children. At the time of sentencing, Walker already had served four months in jail.

the only thing those stupid pieces of paper are good for is to use in court to show that the attacker had a history of violence, and will help justify the shooting in the eyes of a jury.

Theodore Dalrymple would ask victims of "intimate partner violence" whether they thought he could have predicted in advance that this would happen. They would all say, yes, he would have known. He would ask them what evidence would have led him to predict it, and they would list the obvious factors: history of violence, heavy drinking, gang tattoos, etc.

Then he would ask why, knowing they would be assaulted, the women took up with the man anyway. Answers would be on the order of "I was drunk," or "I was bored," or "I wanted sex."

They are stupid pieces of paper and in many jurisdictions the only thing they show is that the woman claimed to be afraid.
Regardless, sounds like she did herself and her community a favor.

And the Democrats want felons to vote.

At the time of sentencing, Walker already had served four months in jail.

Note the Judge was lenient, allowing time served to count. Part of the trouble here seems to be Liberal judges with a heart for the convicts and not for the victims.

A couple of different officers in different states told me they call Protection Orders "Paper Kevlar".

Or in this case, I was young and stupid.

Since her oldest is 10 and she is 27 that would mean that they started having sex when she was sixteen.

I bet a cookie that there is no father in her life.
