RICK PERRY'S AWFUL WEEKEND: Will He Be The Next GOP Candidate To Flame-Out?
Business Insider ^ | Sep. 25, 2011, | Staff

Texas Governor Rick Perry's once-surging campaign is on thin ice, after flailing in three debates and suffering defeats in two key-state straw polls.

Once limited to the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal or The Weekly Standard, concerns over Perry's electability are now very much in the mainstream.

In a major upset for the Perry campaign, former Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain won the Florida Presidency 5 Straw Poll by a 22-point margin — a race Perry heavily contested. Later Saturday, favorite son and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney blew away Perry in the Michigan Straw Poll by a surprising 34-point margin.

Many of his problems have been self-inflicted. Perry's debate performance has been inconsistent, at best — and surprisingly Perry decided to engage his opponents, rather than focus his criticism on Obama.

The substance of his answers has also drawn criticism — and parody — for his incoherent and controversial responses on foreign policy and immigration, respectively.

Go Herman.

I think Cain doesn't have a chance in the Primary, I don't know about the general. He is a good man and would make a wonderful president.

There aren't any conservatives running right now except Cain. If Palin got in there would be two conservatives.

The reality is that Romney ran for governor in an extremely liberal state, Mass. Mr Romney has said things no true conservative would ever say, that bothers me. Mr. Romney has taken back much of what he has said, something that is nigh on impossible to do. If I were a one issue voter it would be abortion. Mr. Romney has committed his greatest sin in my eyes by not doing all possible to stop the heinous practice, not withstanding he apologizes for it now and says he is "reborn". I hope it's true.

Mr. Perry has supported the dream act and supports those actions even today. Mr Perry has said things that no true conservative would ever say. Illegal immigration is not my 1st issue but certainly is my second. Neither Perry or Romney is a true conservative, Cain and Pailin both are.

Perry or Romney will likely be the candidate in the general. I won't vote for either of them in the primary but if they get the nomination I will vote for either of them and be happy to see them beat either Clinton or the One.

Just saying here like a CEO for a corporation is somehow not as qualified and somebody else?

Is it because he has no resume of what he has done for America - only what America has done for him - the land of opportunity?

What we have here are repubs doing the same thing the liberals did - support someone who they like and like what he says but nothing they have done is worthwhile for America but themselves. Different values but same mindset.

It’s unlikely that Palin would want to be the spoiler for Romney. Most likely she will endorse Cain who’s rapidly moving up in the polls as we speak.

If she's going to do it, now would be the perfect time. He's got the kindling burning and needs a burst of oxygen to make it flame up before it flames out. He especially needs money--lots and lots and lots of money--to burn once he gets the fire going. He's not going to get that money unless he looks like true top tier candidate. Palin could probably boost him to that level.

If Palin were inclined to extend the kindness of her endorsement to Cain NOW, it could make all the difference.

“I think he’ll hang in there a while and see what goes. Unless Palin decides to jump in and split the conservative votes between her and Cain giving Romney the nomination.”

Actually, I think if Palin should jump in, there is a very good chance the final ticket will be Palin/Cain. That is a pretty good mix. I’m glad to see Cain surge. I hope it continues.

I was saddened that Morgan Freeman called the Tea Party racist....because they want to get Obama out of office. Foolishly he doesn’t realize it has nothing to do with Obama’s skin color....it is his politics and policy.

Anyway, it was a great argument against what Freeman said when Cain won the straw poll.

Perry needs to learn the cardinal rules of debate for politicians:

1) Don’t shoot yourself in the foot.

2) If you *must* violate rule 1, make sure your foot is out of your mouth before firing.

3) If you *must* violate rules 1 and 2, please refrain from re-loading.

4) If you absolutely cannot *help* but violate rules 1, 2, and 3, the for God’s sake don’t follow up by aiming at the other foot because ‘Duh, I missed.”

Cheers!

Has Perry run out of money yet? That’s what matters.

He will soon enough if this keeps going.

If Palin does run and win the nomination, she's going to have to go for an experienced Washington figure if she wants any chance of winning.

Alternatively, somebody like Cain could only get on the ticket if you have a more politically experienced and middle-of-the-road candidate on top.

Too many memories of Barry Goldwater passing over more recognized party leaders to pick the ideologically compatible by little-known Bill Miller.

Palin herself may recognize that McCain lost the experience issue when he picked her over more experienced politicians.

However good Herman Cain may be, people aren't going to make his first elective position Vice President, let alone President.

“There are many reasons to believe Perry is on the verge of tanking.

However, a Michigan straw poll isn’t one of them. RINO Romney was raised in Michigan. Romney’s father was governor of Michigan. Expecting Perry to win there would be like expecting Romney to win in a Texas straw poll.”

I wish the Texans could agree with you, but they don't like Perry either.

He's underwater in the approval ratings in his own state.

lol... I get your point, but after the last 'debate' of soundbites, I am not so sure Perry would win Texas.

Looks like conservatives are just refusing to live in reality and thereby they are enabling a 2nd term for Obama.

Actually, you are the one refusing to live in reality. Conservatives are not going to settle for less than a conservative this time. We did that and look where it got us!

The primaries are the time to vote our values. That is what the primaries are for.

No longer are we going to listen to those that continue to say, "We have to vote for who the media says will beat Obama!" That's just flat out wrong!

Give us a break with that ominous `Perry or Obama. Pick one’ Clairity.
MN’s right—it’s a false dilemma/choice, `black-or-white’ informal logical fallacy, it only
scares the kids and horses and doesn’t add anything valuable to the discussion.
This isn’t our first rodeo.

“This isn’t our first rodeo.”

Sure you gave us Clinton by voting for Perot, despite sensible people trying to explain reality, same splitting the conservative vote by “waiting and voting for Fred”, and giving us Obama.

Great track record.

And now you want to give us Obama, again.

Sure you gave us Clinton by voting for Perot,

Quit comparing apples to oranges......by that I mean you are talking about the general election and we are all talking about the primaries.

The primaries are the time we vote for the candidate that more closely believes what we believe.

You aren't going anywhere with your tactic of voting for the candidate the media has told you will beat Obama.
