ORLANDO, Fla. -- After putting in a disappointing debate performance the night before, Texas Gov. Rick Perry could take comfort on Friday in the ecstatic reception he got from a large crowd of conservatives meeting here to take a gander at the presidential field.
"As conservatives, we know that values and vision matter. It's not who's the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater that we need to elect," he told 500 attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference. "Remember President Clinton? Man, he could sell ice cubes to Eskimos and the next day be against ice cubes."
The remark was a dig at Romney, who struggled with a reputation as flip-flopper on issues during his 2008 presidential campaign. And it also served Perry's purpose of portraying himself as the regular Joe in the campaign, in contrast to the "slickest" candidate, Romney.
Romney, who spoke before Perry at the event, received a warm welcome. But the crowd stood and cheered as soon as Perry took the stage at the Orange County Convention Center. The Texas governor accentuated his usual anti-Washington stump speech with references to former President Ronald Reagan, a conservative icon. "We need to push through to that shining city on the hill," Perry said. "As President Reagan said, we need bold colors, not pale pastels."
He also opened a new line of attack against President Obama, blasting him for proposing to charge retired military veterans $200 a year to stay on the Tricare-for-Life that supplements Medicare coverage. "Our veterans have already sacrificed enough for this country," Perry said. "Leave them alone."

Did Perry ever actually vote for Reagan since he was DemocRat party hack in the 1980s?
Martinez continues to impress - big time.
I can forgive him for supporting Carter in ‘76. Lots of good people did. He ran a great campaign.
Glad to hear he voted for RR despite being a Dem. I realize he was a Blue Dog, but I wasn’t sure to what extent. Not sure why he decided to back Gore instead of HW Bush or some other Republican.
I really think this immigration thing is hurting him, as is his lack of coherence on the debate stage. He explained it a lot better on Hannity today, though.
Although Rick Perry said at a debate on Thursday that he was lobbied by a 31-year-old woman suffering from cervical cancer to require young girls to receive the HPV vaccine, he did not meet the cancer patient until after he had already issued his executive order mandating the vaccine.
how Clintonesque.
He was a conservative Democrat and voted for Reagan in ‘80 and ‘84.
Pardon me for having trouble in believing that...
LBJ Perry makes Mitt look good. I cannot believ I said that. Mitt the guy who supposedly put his dog in a kennel on the roof of their station wagon on vacations! They are both Newt’s.
Santorum or Bachmann for now. No Federal Reserve - Cain.
He’s gonna need more than a big welcome to be a contender. After that performance last night, I’d hate to see him try to go one on one against Obama.
Here’s a post I wrote up this morning...

Allow me to give you a little history and geography lesson. Much of the south remained registered Democratic but voted Republican for President most of the time. Reasons are historic, and go back to the days of Reconstruction, etc, and the fact that many southern states had Republican parties so small that to be one meant you had no primary voice ever.
Texas was such a state, and so is NC where I live, up until about the time that Reagan changed that.
Typical would be my parents, who were registered D’s til death but who never voted for a D for President during my lifetime. In fact, I know they voted Ike - so before that. This is not anecdotal, NC was a heavily registered D state but voted for Ike, Nixon twice and Reagan twice - and I think the R’s finally sort of equalized the registration about that time. I am not sure about Carter-Ford.
So you can feel about Perry how you do for a number of very legit reasons, but it is very believable for someone in the south to vote for Reagan as a Democrat. Many many millions did.
“Pimp my RINO”
He’s dead, Jim. Go take your open borders turd elsewhere.
Here’s where the race stands now
Romney - must win New Hampshire and will
Bachmann - must win Iowa but wont
Perry - must win South Carolina and will
Gingrich - will hang in there for awhile
Cain - will hang in there for awhile
Santorum - will be gone in a few weeks
Huntsman - will be gone in a few weeks
whoever that fag was on the stage last night - should of been gone already, who the heck was that?
I have lived in West Texas for almost thirty years, and you are ignorant of the facts. When I first moved to Texas, Charlie Stenholm was my Congressman, and he was elected in the Democrat primary because a Republican wasn’t running against him. This area is and has been Conservative. At that time it was Conservative Democrat; I don’t think there are any of those left anymore. Over years, the values stayed the same; but as the Democrats shifted to the left, the area shifted to the Republican Party. People started to run against Charlie. Unlike Rick Perry, Charlie Stenholm stayed a Democrat and eventually lost his seat. Rick Perry and West Texas has always been Conservative. Anyone who suggests that Rick Perry is a liberal has not done their homework.
Your post reflects poorly on you, and no one else.
There’s a huge hole in your argument, Ed. Haskell County is Perry’s home. In the modern era, it only voted Republican in precisely TWO elections for President. 1972 & 1984. They voted HEAVILY against Republicans (in 1964, for example, Goldwater got 15% of the vote, that was a horrible showing for anywhere, nevermind the South), and also heavily anti-GOP in 1968, 1976, 1980 (yup), 1988, 1992 and 1996. Only in 2000 did it go GOP again, and finally moved to staying that way... but that is the 21st Century and NOT the timeframe Perry’s supporters claim.
Well, now tht wqs inspiriing.
