U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president on Thursday, a month after assailing his chief rival in a speech in San Diego.
Romney has garnered support from a growing number of congressional Republicans as he battles with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, front-runner for the party nomination according to most polls.
As someone who shares my background in business, Congressman Issa understands that we need to make fundamental changes in Washington, Romney said in a statement. I am proud to have his support and look forward to working with him as I campaign in California and work to bring jobs back to the state and strengthen the American economy.
Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has criticized the way the Lone Star State added hundreds of thousands more jobs than any other state a phenomena dubbed the "Texas Miracle."
Rick Perrys entire claim to fame is that he kicked our ass. You guys can laugh. You can let it out, Issa said at a downtown fundraiser last month. But his entire claim to fame is all the jobs he created. He took almost all of them from us.
Issa also jabbed Perry for being a career politician. On Thursday, he praised Romney as the right candidate to put the state and nations economy on the right track.
The country would be well served to have someone who knows how the economy works and has worked in the private sector, Issa said in the statement. President Obama never worked in the real economy we cant afford to have another president who has spent his career outside the real economy.
Some of those jobs went to Texas legitimately, and others were lured by Perry’s “emerging technologies” slush fund. Just as we don’t need “crony capitalism” from the left with Obama and Solyndra, we don’t need crony capitalism from the right with Perry.
I have a theory.
Milt has been rolling around for 4 to 6 years doing all types of favors and making friends. While the rest of the candidates were doing their thing, Romney has been on the rubber chicken speech circuit 24/7 endorsing and fund raising for others. I bet Mittens gets all types of head scratching endorsements in the coming months because of all this behind the scenes groundwork he has done.
Who? Obama? It certainly wouldn't be Romney. He won't win, he can't win, too many people will not vote for him.
I think a Romney nomination may destroy the party for good.
There was one declared candidate who had a chance to unite the Tea Party and establishment wings of the party -- Rick Perry. I guess in a way he did unite them. They both decided to destroy him, and he was woefully unprepared to defend himself.
I guess the difference is while the establishment knew full well what destroying Perry would mean (Romney nomination), I think many in the Tea Party were duped. Others like Santorum and Bachmann simply sold out.
Whatever their motivations, pure or malicious, what we are left with is a liberal RINO frontrunner with no credible conservative challengers left standing to compete with him.
I am as depressed about the state of our party as I have ever been. This cannot end well.
What does Issa get in return for his endorsement?

Maybe a GOP Nominee for President who can put a sentence together. I tried to be for Perry, but, he has blown the last three Debates and tonight he blew it big time. The guy is a dolt. I’m a Ronald Reagan-style Conservative, but if I had to choose between Romney and Perry, I’ll have to go with Romney. At least Obama won’t mop the floor with him in the Debates. BTW, I’m a native Texan and tonight, I’m embarrassed for our Great State. Governor Good-hair did not serve us well. It’s over for Perry.
Some Perry supporters are so desperate to defend anything and everything the man says or does that they lay blame on the media when their candidate blows it big time as Perry did in the past 2 debates. And it wasn’t that he can’t debate; he sucks at it but that wasn’t it. He just can’t defend his liberal past.
You nailed it.
Establishment GOP is for Romney.
Mainstream media is for Romney.
It is starting to look like FR is for Romney.
I know why the media and GOP elite are for Romney, but Free Republic??? Huh? Perry has a few warts but he is FAR MORE conservative than Romney. Anyone want to argue that?
I feel like I am watching 2008 and Romney is a better looking slick talking McCain without the “Maverick” brand.
Still a long way to go though FRiend and Perry has never lost a race. However, his performance sucked tonight. He looked overcoached and stiff.
I assumed half the deranged Perry haters were ROMNEY Bots !
Thanks for confirming that !
You might be on to something there. It will interesting to see who/if endorses him next.
I knew the vile hate you sprew had to be from a ROMNEY DRONE !!
You Romney trolls have outed yourselves tonight !
BITE ME!!!
I am not for Romney; did you see my comment at the top of this thread? I could never support any pro-abortion candidate and one of my criticisms if Perry is the fact that he endorsed pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani.
Feel like an idiot yet? You should.
You might be right !
Romney will kill the GOP and get Obama reelected .
Please notice how all the dedicated Perry haters have outed themselves as Romney operatives on FR tonight.
They are feeling cocky tonight!
I said I have lost all respect for Issa because of this endorsement. And you think that means I am for Romney?
You should seek help.
Can he correct in time is the question.

Well, let me answer the question for you: NO! The guy just doesn’t have it. He’s an empty suit. We Texans have known that for the 22 years he’s been in politics. He’s D-U-M-B !!!
I think most on FR had their hearts in the right place. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they didn't realize their actions would help (even in a small way) ensure the Romney nomination.
At the end of the day, each candidate has to stand for him / her self. No excuses from me.
Still, while Rick Perry has a number of positions / accomplishments that any conservative could proudly support (guns, abortion, taxes, job creation), many on the right chose to focus on his flaws -- some real (tuition for illegals), some imagined (he is corrupt).
In the end, the left, the establishment GOP, and assorted others have in all probability been successful in destroying Rick Perry. I have to imagine that Willard Romney, and ultimately Pres. Obama, surely must appreciate their efforts.
