New law leads to more insured young adults (Obamacare allows youth to be on Parent's plans till 26)

At least one part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul has proven popular. With the economy sputtering, the number of young adults covered by health insurance grew by about a million as families flocked to take advantage of a new benefit in the law.

Two surveys released Wednesday — one by the government, another by Gallup — found significantly fewer young adults going without coverage even as the overall number of uninsured remained high.

The government's National Center for Health Statistics found that the number of uninsured people ages 19-25 dropped from 10 million last year to 9.1 million in the first three months of this year, a sharp decline over such a brief period.

A separate Gallup survey reported that the share of adults 18-25 without coverage dropped from 28 percent last fall to 24.2 percent by this summer. That drop translates to roughly 1 million or more young adults gaining coverage.

The new health care law allows young adults to remain on their parents' health plans until they turn 26. Previously, families faced a hodgepodge of policies. Some health plans covered only adult children while they were full-time students. Others applied an age cutoff.

Elizabeth Wilson, an aspiring opera singer who lives near Indianapolis, said her mother's plan dropped her in the midst of a medical crisis because she had turned 23. At the time, Wilson was in the hospital under treatment for an inflammation of the pancreas. Because of the overhaul, she has been able to get back on the policy.

Then just pass a law saying you can remain on your parents’ health plan till age 97. Problem solved!

I’m on Tricare Prime. We could add our son but his premiums would be through the roof. So, is this healthcare option for private companies and government is exempt? (I had no intention of putting my son on my policy so don’t yell at me)

Sure - and they'll have to kill off the old and infirm faster (by denying care) to be able to provide that.

Baby wants to vote at 18, okay, you can.
Can’t drink till your 21, boo hoo.
But now you can be on mommy and daddy’s health insurance till you turn 26, you little pampered, helpless, can’t take care of yourself imbecile.
That family health insurance law has to be the worst crap our government has ever passed on the American people.
Child till 26, yea that’s going to teach responsibility....

Does any know if you have a 19 year old daughter in college full time but is married, can she still stay on my health insurance until 26 even though she is married?

My daughter graduated from college in Idaho and moved here for work. He employer doesn't provide health insurance. She had a basic policy to cover catastrophic type expenses which ran her about $32 per month in Idaho.

The same thing costs her $110 here. The difference is that Pennsylvania requires all policies to include gold-plated coverage for substance abuse. Even though she had to pass a drug screening and background check to work with children.

So I guess the message our useful kids are supposed to take from all of this is break your arm and you're on your own until you reach your high deductible. But stuff illegal substances up your nose and the welcome mat is out.

Yes, you can. The courts have ruled that mandates can not discriminate on account of martial status. Check with your employer and notify them of the desire to put her on your policy.

Yes, under this law a married child is eligible to remain on your plan until age 26, although his or her spouse is not.

It wasn't free, it costs more and it also added costs to everyone else’s policy for what it didn't charge the young adults.

My husband is active duty and we also have triCare Prime. The new law doesn’t apply to us. The kids still have until 21 if not in college and 24 if they are.

(My son is a Type 1 diabetic, so medical insurance is a terrifying subject for us. He’s actually dropped out of our local high school and just finished with a home program so that he can graduate 8 months earlier just for this reason.)
