From people that were used to using titles - actually few in those days could actually write. He rejected the title, does not matter what others wrote.

Figuring out what title to use addressing the President was one of the tasks of the first Congress in 1789. In a world of monarchies, a republic with an elected chief magistrate was something new. Vice President John Adams was one of those in favor of something that would show a lot of respect for the President. In turn, someone suggested that Adams should be addressed as “His Rotundity.”
He stuck up for gays and lesbians in the speech. What a bad muslim he is today! Fatwa be upon him!
