Food Inflation Reaches "Quite Concerning" Levels In Houston

The rate of food inflation is "quite concerning," according to a Jefferies survey from Houston. This could lead to pressure on manufacturers and retailers:

Our pricing survey in Houston once again showed further price increases coming through to retail. Our average basket is now up over 9% in about a year and increased +1.5% since our last visit to the market in July. Clearly, we are now seeing very sizable price movements in our basket and, even in the robust economic climate in Houston, the size of the inflation being seen is quite concerning. With prices moving significantly higher, a stressed consumer is responding as can be seen with the volume declines and uptick in private label consumption (see our note Nielsen Nuggets, September 15, 2011). If there is a silver lining, the sequential price increases decelerated in the latest survey.

I heard that anything made from cotton will be going up in price too. Most Texas cotton farmers in the Hutto, Taylor and surrounding area never planted a single seed this year.

Right now a lot of people that own land and have a pig problem are simply shooting the pigs and leaving them to rot.

I expect sooner or later some of these land owners will figure out they can trap the pigs and sell a live pig to people as a way of getting around the food safety laws that you would have if you tried to sell just the processed meat.

The land owner gets rid of the pigs, they make money, and people buying the pig gets meat on the table.

At the present time my brother in law has attempted to put a damper on my pig hunting. When the problem is solved I'll keep a pig for you.

Don't really care how my BIL gets his head out of his ass when the problem is solved.

Peanut crop was subpar. Prices for peanut butter slated to rise 30% in November.

I’ve been keeping track of this aspect of inflation. I’m outside Houston.

My grocery bill has increased by 14% over the past few months. Since it is just my husband and I here, we don’t do prepared and junk food, this increase is for basics. I hate to see what people with children are looking at in increases.

Good reason to stop paying farmers not to plant crops.

Thanks!!! My hubby bought a gun for Y2K. He never shot it. I keep telling him that I want him to get me a pig. If you need any help, give me a holler.
