"The accelerator we use is a new type called a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator which uses high power lasers and ionised gas to accelerate charged particles to very high energies - thus shrinking a conventional accelerator, which is 100m long, to one which fits in the palm of your hand."

Can a gamma ray gun be far off?............

Now, if they could turn that Gamma ray pulse into a Gamma Ray pulse LASER, THAT would be some weapon system.........

Usually to make gamma rays you have to use radiactive elements, sounds like they use a laser to pump energy into a gas which then releases gamma rays, neato!

The ray could have several uses, such as in medical imaging, radiotherapy and radioisotope production for PET (positron emission tomography) scanning.

This is new to me. What nuclear reaction produces radio isotopes using gamma rays.

If I recall my high school physics correctly you have to add a neutron to make a new isotope.

How can a gamma ray do that?

Intersting, maybe they can figure out a way to make new light bulbs.

Then we could save the earth. /extreme sarcasm

Getting belted by gamma rays is serious business, and should never be attempted without proper supervision.

Physicists have discovered that ultra-short duration laser pulses can interact with ionised gas to give off beams that are so intense they can pass through 20 cm of lead and would take 1.5 m of concrete to be completely absorbed.

The ray could have several uses, such as at airport security checkpoints and scanning trucks traveling down the highways for contraband.

There, fixed it.
