California schools to turn away children without whooping cough vaccine

Some California schools are turning away middle and high school students who have not received a required whooping cough vaccine while others are defying a law passed last year after a historic spike in cases of the potentially fatal disease.

The law approved last September initially required all students entering grades seven through 12 to get vaccinated by the start of the 2011-2012 school year.

Lawmakers passed a 30-day extension this summer as districts worried many students wouldn't meet the deadline.

-- How is it easier? Perry's EO said the form had to be accepted via the internet. Our Opt out now requires taking a notarized copy to the school. --

No, Perry did not say the form had to be accepted via internet. You may have inferred that from context, but it is not what he said. The EO said that APPLICATION for the form had to be made available via the internet. The HPV opt-out would still require taking a notarized copy of the state-proved __state-provided__ form to the school.

In case anybody thinks the typo somehow meant to say state-APPROVED, which it did not mean to say!

You are correct. After rereading, I see I read more into it than was written.

So it looks the same as the Opt out we have now, not easier or harder. I take it this portion of the order was enacted anyways as we can now request the form via the internet.

- -That is not an opt out. That is to provide wriiten documentation that you already had that particular disease (and lived) so you are now immune. --

I know, but it's easier to lie on that (and some probably do), and thereby get excused, than it is to go through the medical/religion/conscience procedure.

Yes. The rules were changed in December 2007, making the opt out application available via internet. The easier access applies for applications for affidavit for ALL vaccines. Perry "gave" an opt out for ALL vaccines. Actually, the opt out was given by the legislature, Perry ordered the internet access. The ease in availability is not HPV vaccine specific.

That would only get you out of the chicken pox that way.

If you are trying to avoid any other state required vaccines, you still need the form.

I do understand the original question was about the chicken pox so your comment makes sense to that topic.

But I think there would be darn few people that lie about the chicken pox but either get the vaccination or the form for all the others.

And the notary, and the 90 day window for initial validity, and the biannual repetition.

It was coincidence that I'd just looked it up, and I think the "already had it" exemption (with the chickenpox carveout) is an interesting facet of Texas "mandatory" (scare quotes because NO vaccines are mandatory in Texas) vaccination law.

and the biannual repetition

Of the whole process, that is the piece I don't understand.

That was implemented by the administrative agency, not by legislation. Perry has the power to revise that, today, if he wants, and the legislature would have no issue with it.

Sounds good to me. I wish public schools would turn away more kids. It saves them from a far worse disease ‘liberalism’.

Oh, on the motivation angle, the bureaucrats in the administrative agency are in the medical "profession" and "industry," are are STRONGLY biased to vaccinate. It's a good bet that many people will opt out once, then give it up, thereby increasing the vaccination/immunity rate for the state. The agency is measured by the "percent immunized" score, and is motivated to make that as high as possible.

In other words, the biannual repetition makes perfect sense. The goal is to vaccinate even reluctant patients.

I grew up before the Polio vaccine and it was a big deal to every parent...Life in an iron lung was not unheard of...Crippling and death were also the result...I remember my mother saying no to several things I wanted to do as a kid....It was “no its polio season” Glad my kids were of an age to get the Salk vaccine....although you also got the tetanus shot, that even as an adult needs to have a booster every 5 years....When I stepped on an old nail on the farm, I needed the booster......(as an adult)

They had to insist on the shots, it’s the illegals whom are the carriers. They certainly aren’t going to turn them away at the boarders...to many votes don’t you know.

It's not only illegals. Too many otherwise smart folks refuse vaccinations for their kids, believing the hype from folks who claim they can cause autism. These folks use the latest statistics about the 'rise in autism' to bolster their arguments. What they don't say is that the 'rise in autism' among kids is because of the newer methods of diagnosis, which includes Asperger's Syndrome, which is more behavioral than anything. I daresay two of my kids would have been diagnosed with Asperger's because they're not real comfortable in new and unfamiliar social settings. Folks used to call that SHY!

The reason for the rise in diagnoses of autism is that schools get more money from the Federal Govt. if they have more 'special needs' students, so if children are diagnosed as 'autistic', they're considered 'special needs'.

Because of my age my doctor is trying to push me into a flu shot this year....the only time my husband was sick enough to call in sick at work it was right after he got a flu shot....I won’t take them and he only did the one time...I think me and my doctor (that I love) are going to have a disagreement next month when I go in. That poor man knowing he is dealing with a retired nurse (bad patients) threats me on some things with kid gloves...

I would rather have one of my children die than to have them in the living death of severe brain damage my nephew has been in for the past 25 years. He functions at the level of a three year old, because of a DPT shot. He can’t speak. His entire life was wiped out in a moment. After my son also had a severe reaction, I’m not taking any more chances.

It’s easy for high and mighty people to make decrees when it’s never happened to them.

That's not completely true in Florida. You can get a religious exemption from the health department. You just need to sign a form you object to vaccinations due to your religious beliefs. They will give you a blue waver that all schools must accept, including private schools.

Whooping cough is potentially fatal for Newborns to 15 months. Who HAS to be vaccinated? 7 th grade to 12 th grade. This doesn’t even pass a basic logic test. It does however speak volumes about the marriage of government & big pharma.

For all the pro vax hysterics, if vaccines are all that they are supposed to be (which they are not) the UN vaccinated pose no risk to the vaccinated.

I share your memories.

Those who have grown up in the age of vaccines and antibiotics perhaps don’t realize how ungrateful they seem when they forego the blessing modern medicine has offered them and their children.

We oldsters remember when our entire communities lined up to be vaccinated against polio. We remember the real fear and those among us who fell to the virus.

Just this week I was reading old newspaper obits from the 1930s as part of some community history research. It’s amazing how often even young people died from appendicitis, scarlet fever, measles, diptheria, illnesses that post-WWII drugs now cure routinely.

Shame on us when we forget to count our blessings.

I was married to a nurse and was friendly with one of the docs who lived a few doors down. He believes we’re an over immunized society that faces the possibility of disaster because of it.

Obviously some vaccines are good but the doc talks about the fact that We’re immunizing against things that were once common usually mild illnesses. In fact Whooping cough has an extremely low mortality rate, mostly among infants and vaccinations for it generally take place years after the real danger has passed.

When my wife’s son had chicken pox, the doc brought his daughter to our house to “vaccinate” the girl the old fashioned way.

That’s a good point. Protecting the population against easily communicable diseases is one of the few legitimate functions of a “public health” system.
