LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration has cautioned the corn industry over its ongoing use of the term "corn sugar" to describe high fructose corn syrup, asking them to stop using the proposed new name before it has received regulatory approval, The Associated Press has learned.
The Corn Refiners Association wants to use "corn sugar" as an alternative name for the widely used liquid sweetener currently labeled as high fructose corn syrup on most sodas and packaged foods. They're attempting an image makeover after some scientists linked the product to obesity, diabetes and other health problems; some food companies now tout products that don't contain the ingredient.
Though it could take another year before the FDA rules on the request made last September to change the name, the Corn Refiners Association has for months been using "corn sugar" on television commercials and at least two websites: cornsugar.com and sweetsurprise.com.
A series of high-profile television, online and print advertisements tell consumers that "sugar is sugar" and that corn sugar is natural and safe, provided it's consumed in moderation.

I was thinking about this very topic the other day. I have access to both sugar Coca Cola and HFCS Coca Cola, and of course the purists will tell you that sugar Coke is the real thing and HFCS Coke is swill, but in a carefully conducted taste test, performed by me, I discovered that HFCS Coke definitely tastes better. I didn't even have to strain my taste buds to discern the difference. Sugar Coke is too sweet, whereas HFCS Coke is noticeably less sweet and more tart. It gets my vote.
Taste is the most subjective of all things, but at least no one can say there's no difference.
Here’s one link that talks a bit about volume. I hope the mercury has been addressed in the past 3 years.

And its the kidneys. Too much fructose can bring on kidney stones.

Cancer cells slurp up fructose, US study finds
* Study shows fructose used differently from glucose
WASHINGTON Aug 2 (Reuters) - Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same.
Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.
They said their finding, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types.
“These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,”

There have been sevral studies confirming these findings. This is the first article that popped up on a search.
Totally agree. Producers of food should not be free to change the nomenclature such that it is misleading, inaccurate. I am not big on federal regulations, I believe generally speaking fraud laws could do a better job of enforcement than the FDA ever could (this is a perfect example, where they are changing the label for HFCS to Corn Sugar without FDA or USDA approval).
There is no such thing as Corn Sugar, to my knowledge. It is a concoction made from rearranging molecules of corn. Corn Sugar is false and misleading.
Mase, of possible interest *PING*.
I like this part.
This creates a fascinating puzzle. The rats in the Princeton study became obese by drinking high-fructose corn syrup, but not by drinking sucrose. The critical differences in appetite, metabolism and gene expression that underlie this phenomenon are yet to be discovered, but may relate to the fact that excess fructose is being metabolized to produce fat, while glucose is largely being processed for energy or stored as a carbohydrate, called glycogen, in the liver and muscles.
So much for ‘the body can’t tell the difference’ commercials! LOL
I’ve known several people that have or had cancer and they were admonished to AVOID all sugars as it feeds cancer.
I’m a free market libertarian. But food labeling is essentially fraud prevention, and provides for informed free market transactions. My solution to labeling is illustrated by the following example:
Ingredients: Sugar (high fructose corn syrup, dehydrated cane juice, honey, dextrose, maltose, sucrose, glucose), frogs (crunchy), wolf nipples, springs, rams bladder extract.
Crafty devils.
I agree. I would also like to see them have to list grams by volume as well as per serving. Sometimes they get away by saying an item has no trans fats because they make the portion size so small and if the amount is under .5 per serving they can call it zero. Very misleading to the public that puts several tablespoons of trans fat laden sugar and fat free frozen whipped topping on their pie, thinking they are not getting any trans fats. Instead people look at the label but don't really read the ingredient list. It tells then 0, when if it went by volume and you could see that there are 20 trans fats, you might think twice.
You really have to eat whole foods to avoid the garbage marketed as food. And even then you have to be careful.
HFCS is not “Corn Syrup”
Corn syrup is a legitimate simple sugar, while HFCS is an unnatural substance that requires complicated processing to produce.
Yep and then you have be careful of the artificial sweeteners like splenda/sucralose, aspartame, saccharine. Those are the worst one. If you are going to use artificial sweeteners the better choices are xylitol, malitol, stevia types and there’s one that starts with an e.
The past two weeks we have been keeping a close eye on the sugars and types of sugars we eat. It is amazing when you keep track and see where so much hidden sugar is.
>> I see ingredient labels with dehydrated cane juice rather than sugar! <<
.
The cane juice is considerebly less refined than white sugar. It still contains most of the natural flavinoids from the plant.
>> “I dont buy into the health concerns on the corn syrup” <<
.
HFCS is not the same as “corn syrup.”
Corn syrup is a simple extraction process, while making HFCS is a complicated process that alters the molecular structure resulting in an unnatural substance that insulin is not able to metabolize correctly.
I saw “dehydrated cane juice” at a health food store. It’s pretty white to have too may flavonoids. I look at it as a labeling trick. People into healthy foods will choose a “dehydrated cane juice” product at a higher price than a “sugar” product made from dehydrated cane juice. “Raw sugar” is another label allowed by USDA that is poorly defined and used to avoid the “sugar” label.

Its not just that cancer cells “slurp up” the sugars, but how they do it that is the problem.
Normal, differentiated cells use an aerobic oxidation process, and under this process the undifferentiated cells (cancer) are simply destroyed by the immune system, but if your PH drops below the alcaline level, anerobic processes take over and the undifferentiated cells begin to feed by the fermentastion of the sugars, rather than oxidation.
This is what begins the viscious circle known as ‘cachexia’ between the cancer and the liver, Which ultimately starves the normal cells to death and allows the cancer to grow at a rapid rate.
Returning your PH to an alcaline level becomes difficult, but it is the only way to stop the cancer. Cancer cannot exist in an alcaline system.
According to the nutrition and ingredients info on the Two If By Tea website they are made with real sugar.
Now more than ever. What's the old saying: When your recipes ingredients have ingredients...
