Revenge of the Jews?
I've never been to a Republican victory party (or any event in Howard Beach!) where black velvet yarmulkes were as plentiful as they were at Bob Turner's event last night, and there are few elections in which the Jewish politics I've always covered with interest are going to get spun quite this hard.
DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is already out with the party line: These were just Orthodox Jews, not the mainline, Democrat-supporting, population.
That drew an irritated email to me from a non-partisan Orthodox leader this morning.
"Of course the DNC chair has to downplay the NY9 result, that's her job. But you would think that she would do so in a way that's about politics by addition rather than subtraction. Chair Wasserman Schultz seems to be suggesting the Democrats should write off Orthodox Jews, rather than reach out - which is rather surprising since she has a sizable Orthodox community in her own Florida district," he said.
The subtleties, and their limits, are worth understanding here. The district does have more Orthodox congregations than any other in America. This doesn't necessarily mean this was a vote about Israel, or same-sex marriage, though. Many of those Orthodox Jewish voters are, simply, Republicans who typically support Republican candidates. They weren't swing voters in this race at all, though they were unusually well-organized and motivated; others, including a few I spoke to last night, spoke like other Americans about dissatisfaction with Obama's economic leadership.

Wasserman Shultz is traveling the roads of life minus an operating brain. Come, November, 2012, she will be among the unemployed!!! One cannot believe that that empt suit, incompetent Obama made that useless woman the DNC chief!!! Idiots!!!
‘these were just Orthodox Jews, not the mainline, Democrat-supporting, population. ‘
Can’t get enough of Deeeebbieee Downer!

It used to be said that Queens had more [ex]Israelis than Tel Aviv.
I wonder what turn out was like.
It’s willful blindness, pure and simple. The Democrats DO stand to lose and lose big time due to their alienation of all but JINOS. It only takes one group to crack the ice, and that one group had consistently voted Dem for nearly a century. Who knows how big the resulting leak will become?
So these were just Jews, not “Jew-Jews”...?
Blabbermouth Shultz’s district is next, and she knows it.
God does not play favorites among His people, however, the Bible does tell us that God's chosen people are the Jewish race because they were the ONLY ones to obey Him in lieu of other gods. Deuteronomy 7:6 says, "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession."
Revenge????
Is politico trying to make the Jews look hateful for not voting a democrat back into office?
“So these were just Jews, not Jew-Jews...?”
To many non-observant Jews, Orthodox Jews don’t really have rights or a voice.
Wonder if they can hear us now.
Looks like it was both.
**So these were just Jews, not Jew-Jews...?**
Actually, those were real Jews, not communism impaired “Deformed Jews”.
Oops - typo there. I should have typed “Reformed Jews”.
However, error sometimes tells us something ....
Blaming this election loss on the Jews is pure political spin. Obama lost this election because Democrats are seeing the results of his policies on the economy.
Weprin goes to an Orthodox Young Israel synagogue. I’ve been there. I prayed there.
Orthodox Jews didn’t care. They voted for a catholic man instead. This is big.
‘Orthodox Jews didnt care. They voted for a catholic man instead. This is big.’
Yep. We aren’t buying the lies here.
“Weprin goes to an Orthodox Young Israel synagogue.”
Do you know which one?
I’m somewhat suprised, in that YI are typically very much Zionist.
In fact, I was a member of the YIS in Brookline (Boston) when at MIT.
the other thing to remember is that in 2010, Turner got 40% even before Weiner’s pics, even before Koch’s endorsement, even before gay marriage was an issue
