A deadly hysteria - Bachmann’s vaccine lunacy
New York Post ^ | September 14, 2011 | ROBERT GOLDBERG, vice president of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest

Posted on 09/14/2011 12:59:16 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

n Monday night’s debate, Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum all seemed to be auditioning for the role that Jude Law plays in the film “Contagion” -- Alan Krumwiede, a blogger who tells millions that a vaccine to combat a lethal pathogen is actually dangerous, and claims both the epidemic and vaccine were created by government to enrich drug companies.

Krumwiede’s conspiracy theory proves deadly -- and so will these Republicans’, if anyone listens.

....Don’t be distracted by legitimate, but minor, questions about how states should make public-health decisions: The thrust of this attack is garbage -- and deadly garbage at that. The anti-vaccine psuedo-science behind the charge has been thoroughly discredited.

By alleging that vaccines cause retardation and brain damage, Bachmann is providing aid and comfort to such groups as Generation Rescue, which still defend the now-discredited claims that vaccines cause autism. (The Lancet decertified Andrew Wakefield’s “study” last year. This year, the British Medical Journal showed his research was bogus to boot.)

All three candidates slammed Texas Gov. Rick Perry for requiring immunization of 12-year-old girls against the human papilloma virus, a leading cause of cervical cancer. The attack truly became a blogworthy screed as we heard about how Perry and Merck (the developer of Gardasil, one of the two HPV vaccines) profited from the mandate at the expense of children’s health.

....Unless other Republicans confront Bachmann or she changes her tune, fewer parents will vaccinate their kids. More children will die. Tragically, life will imitate art.

You need it so Merck can make a lot of money....

You make it sound like someone at Merck was just surfing the net for pr0n and accidentally stumbled across the recipe for making what is now marketed as Gardasil.

Merck, like every other drug company that wants to business in the US has to risk sometimes billions of dollars over a period of many years in order to bring a drug to market. Many drugs never make it to market and the FDA doesn't mind thousands of people dieing because a vaccine or cure is bogged down in red tape.

I think most people would prefer taking a pill or receiving an injection as insurance against getting cut open only after cancer or some other ailment has eaten away and destroyed an organ. These drugs don't drop from the sky and cost nothing to make and distribute. And our corrupt government and even more corrupt Tort system has made advancements in medical science extremely risky and expensive. I'm sure there are many cures that haven't been discovered because people like you don't want drug companies to be profitable.

And because you are so worried that someone might make a dollar in the pharmaceutical industry, you don't mind having to pay much higher premiums for medical insurance and taxes for everyone else because you would prefer woman have cervical cancer and the huge expense involved with dealing with that, than the horror of Merck recovering development costs and benefiting its shareholders.

If you hate the way business is done and hate the free market economy and hate the idea that many women might not have to suffer from cervical cancer, then maybe you would be happier with Obamacare where Gardasil won't even be an option and cures for other maladies will never be found again. With non-existant cures for a host of plagues you then can be happy as millions of others suffer agonizing death because someone you don't know isn't making money discovering and making a drug that would save lives.

It’s BS. The whole question about whether it works or not is a smokescreen.

You are either free or you are not free, there is no middle ground.
If someone can tell you things you must do, are you free?

No middle ground.

and some innocent girls died from the vaccine. It should be the parents decision and probably the girls whether or not its worth the risk. It shouldn’t be the governments job to force parents to have their daughters innoculated with a new and untried drug.

So you agree with Rick Perry that young girls 12-13 years old should forcibly be vaccinated against STDs without their parents consent? How liberal of you.

Hmmm, someone else on this thread this morning who makes unwarranted leaps of inference in a way that fosters his polemical needs but doesn't address the matter at hand, not state-mandated vaccination, but wacko anti-vaccination theories.

Maybe you yourself should run with Mayor Bloomberg on an ‘independent’ ticket. Michelle Obama might endorse your pro-health-mandates as well. Obamacare AND Romneycare could be part of your platform.

I mean, while we’re on the subject of cost, outlawing sugar and soda and white flour and those sorts of things would save far more lives.

How about those over 30,000 automobile deaths every year? If we could finally get everyone over to public transportation we’d save far, far more lives than Gardasil ever could.

Really, both gun and knife control should be next, of course. Again, far cheaper than a $360 per person vaccine simply to make all these killers illegal.

Sure, I understand why post at FR—you’re so obviously a conservative at heart.

-- The "effect" of the EO was to make the cervical vaccine easily available -- but now it is not. If you will read the LINKS in Post #18 you will see the necessity of why he "chose" that route. --

I did read those links, as well as many other writers who have defended the mandate as prudent, and also as "not really a mandate."

And I agree, mandating vaccinations has the (essential) side effect of rendering them easily available. I disagree that Gardasil is not readily available now, it is quite available, and the medical practitioners push the vaccine hard.

You seem to again be defending a government mandate, by the way. It's puzzling to me that you would defend it, but not be for it.

What I’ve seen is that you needed to submit your child’s personal information online, then wait for weeks for a form for you to fill out. But as part of the process you would have had to swear that you were a conscientious objector to vaccines in general. That would have led your health insurance company to increase your premiums. Also, schools could have kept your kid out of attendance while you were waiting for your forms. Then, in a couple of years, you’d have had to go through the process all over again.

I guess Texans just should have been grateful to Perry for not requiring them to personally travel to Austin and for having made the initial form requests available online!

FR is supposed to be a conservative site, but to hear people defending this here, you’d get the idea that a good number of FReepers have somehow missed that point!

The blank for is available online. It is possible to assert a conscientious objection to one or more vaccines, but not all of them (cafeteria style objection is enabled by statute). The affidavit must be sent to the state government, and after they approve the request, the state grants a waiver that is good for two years. Turnaround time is supposed to be a couple weeks, total.

-- Also, schools could have kept your kid out of attendance while you were waiting for your forms. --

And some schools, mostly private schools, would reject admission unless all government vaccines were administered. IOW, the schools do not accept anybody who obtains a legal vaccination waiver. Public schools do not have that latitude.

I'm not sure if you are looking for his passionate defense of the mandate as government policy, or his "admits mistake" walkback, so am providing both.

Where is his (as you stated) "passionate defense of the mandate as government policy."

If there is such a statement, I really would like to read what he said. LINK please.

Read all about how Palin was peddling this Federal Medicaid / SCHIPS program in Alaska in 2007 !!!!

Palin said it was FREE .
Gee I guess our federal programs are free NOW !!
http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/09/13/sarah-palins-alaska-took-federal-funds-to-increase-access-to-gardasil/

I saw some SUPPOSED PALIN supporter ( Grew Whiskers) screaming about a Perry professional poster conspiracy.

The LEFT always accuses their ENEMIES and Perry is their enemy of actually what they are actually doing !
Lenin and Hitler and Soros were/are great at this and shutting up
their enemies. Shutting down Perry support is very important.
The other new SCAM is to call this non stop astroturfing of Perry as Vetting !
Yes , posting lies , personal attacks character assassination is down under the cover of " Vetting" by Perry Haters/trolls. SO astroturfing non stop lies and smears is a sort of a free public service by Perry Haters.

Palin and Alaska never attempted to MANDATE the vaccine.

Big, big, big difference.

Yes!

And it is!

Please show me the deaths (other effects) caused by this cervical cancer vaccine.

A link for the thread would be good information.

Boy do I know what you mean. I feel like I'm on DU or something. “If we can just save one life” where have I heard that before?

I only bring this up because the people supporting this EO seem to think it's ok due to the opt out rule. I really object to having to submit your child's personal information to the government. and then wait for the governments PERMISSION to not get this shot. good grief

-- Where is his (as you stated) "passionate defense of the mandate as government policy." --

Here's a different link, from the one I provided to you a few minutes ago:
Gov. Perry Establishes HPV Vaccination Program for Young Women - Feb 2, 2007

"Requiring young girls to get vaccinated before they come into contact with HPV is responsible health and fiscal policy that has the potential to significantly reduce cases of cervical cancer and mitigate future medical costs."

And here is the same link I gave a few minutes ago:
Gov. Rick Perry's Remarks Regarding the HPV Vaccine Legislation - May 5, 2007

I have never seen so much misinformation spread about a vital public health issue, whether it is the effectiveness of the vaccine, the impact of the order on parents' decision-making authority, or the impact this will have on the behavior of young women. But the fact remains: my order always has been and always will be about protecting women's health. And while I respect the voice of the legislature, this issue has never been about the separation of powers, but the saving of lives.

Those legislators who claim this is about their right to determine public policy have succeeded in overturning my order. But if they care about succeeding in stopping the spread of the second most deadly cancer among women, and not just asserting their power, then they will turn around and pass legislation to make access to the HPV vaccine as widely available as possible. Instead, they have sent me a bill that will ensure three-quarters of our young women will be susceptible to a virus that not only kills hundreds each year, but causes great discomfort and harm to thousands more. Instead of vaccinating close to 95 percent of our young women, and virtually eliminating the spread of the most common STD in America, they have relegated the lives of our young women to social Darwinism, where only those who can afford it, or those who understand the virtues of it, will get access to the HPV vaccine.

Is Sarah Palin a Statist.

She is a hypocrite from trashing anyone for the same program she was peddling as FREE in 2007 ! I had no idea a Federal Medicaid /SCHIPS program was free ?
http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/09/13/sarah-palins-alaska-took-federal-funds-to-increase-access-to-gardasil/

Its time to move on from this phony scandal being peddled by
Bachman who is looking nutty and appears to be teamed up with ROMNEY !
