A deadly hysteria - Bachmann’s vaccine lunacy
New York Post ^ | September 14, 2011 | ROBERT GOLDBERG, vice president of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest

Posted on 09/14/2011 12:59:16 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

n Monday night’s debate, Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum all seemed to be auditioning for the role that Jude Law plays in the film “Contagion” -- Alan Krumwiede, a blogger who tells millions that a vaccine to combat a lethal pathogen is actually dangerous, and claims both the epidemic and vaccine were created by government to enrich drug companies.

Krumwiede’s conspiracy theory proves deadly -- and so will these Republicans’, if anyone listens.

....Don’t be distracted by legitimate, but minor, questions about how states should make public-health decisions: The thrust of this attack is garbage -- and deadly garbage at that. The anti-vaccine psuedo-science behind the charge has been thoroughly discredited.

By alleging that vaccines cause retardation and brain damage, Bachmann is providing aid and comfort to such groups as Generation Rescue, which still defend the now-discredited claims that vaccines cause autism. (The Lancet decertified Andrew Wakefield’s “study” last year. This year, the British Medical Journal showed his research was bogus to boot.)

All three candidates slammed Texas Gov. Rick Perry for requiring immunization of 12-year-old girls against the human papilloma virus, a leading cause of cervical cancer. The attack truly became a blogworthy screed as we heard about how Perry and Merck (the developer of Gardasil, one of the two HPV vaccines) profited from the mandate at the expense of children’s health.

....Unless other Republicans confront Bachmann or she changes her tune, fewer parents will vaccinate their kids. More children will die. Tragically, life will imitate art.

Many conservatives here are just as statist and imperious as any liberal. If your notion of individual liberty comes into conflict with their pet issues, they will mock you as mercilessly as any DU mouthbreather. The urge to control others is apparently bred deep into many.

One thing is very evident these that support a governor executing a MANDATE to the consumers of private health insurance, in the same manner that algore required telephone companies to collect his internet tax are clueless about what it means to remember the first TEA PARTY.

Or from an unfaithful spouse.

Or from a spouse who does not know they are a carrier for HPV, as 40% of those with HPV never exhibit any symptoms.

-- Where on FR or anywhere else in the world have I said that [Gardisil should be mandatory]? --

You've defended the effect of the EO as being good public policy; and as far as I can tell, you have zero objection to Perry's having enacted the EO.

Leaving the rest aside, because it has been refuted ad nauseum, ....you consider a cancer vaccine on par with a telephone tax?

Rick Perry intended to force every 12 year old girl in Texas to take Gardisil shots because his former Chief of Staff Mike Toomey is a lobbyist for Merck.
Perry literally shoved a mandate down the throat of every Texas citizen by executive decree, as if he were a Hillary Clinton dictator, until, thank God, the Texas legislature crushed it overwhelmingly.

Thank God the people of Texas were not going to stand for his big government totalitarian authoritarian anti-Christian anti-American ideals.

This is the kind of thing we can expect from Rick Perry if he were to be elected to the most powerful seat in the world.

If you read her response, you'll see the confirmation of my point.

Does she think liberals statists are all arguing in bad faith when they force you to "do the right thing."

"It's not statism when I do it," LOL!

The "effect" of the EO was to make the cervical vaccine easily available -- but now it is not. If you will read the LINKS in Post #18 you will see the necessity of why he "chose" that route.

I am so old-fashioned, when I wrote "partner" I actually meant marital partner. :)

I don't have time for hobbies. My country is being destroyed by the Left, and I'm arguing with people bent on helping them out.

Parents may choose to opt out of mandatory vaccinations for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs. The governor’s executive order directs DSHS to ease the opt out process by providing exemption request forms online.

I don't know what was in the "easily obtainable" opt out form. But that above wordng leads me to believe you would need to state a reason for opting out? Also, why is it a request form. You have to ask permission from your government? As a conservative, the wording of the above sets off lots of alarm bells.

Excuse me? How about the reality of what was attempted. The Governor decided he would mandate all PRIVATE health insurance customers to PAY a higher premium for a few to receive a cancer vaccine. IT did not matter WHO got the vaccine, what matter is the COST was mandated to be shared by all that purchase the insurance. IT was a TAX without consent of the governed... So gardasil protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 (that's four) and if there is a type 18, then there are at least 8 types of HPV. (iirc, the actual number is over 30) .

This has been sold to the public as a cancer prevention measure, and while it may prevent some, it will not prevent all, even HPV related, cancer.

-- Please give me a link to this. --

I'm not sure if you are looking for his passionate defense of the mandate as government policy, or his "admits mistake" walkback, so am providing both.

Gov. Rick Perry's Remarks Regarding the HPV Vaccine Legislation - May 05, 2007

Rick Perry Admits Mistake on Gardasil-HPV Vaccine Decision - Aug 15, 2011

"I agreed with their decision. I don't always get it right, but I darn sure listen," he said of the legislature responding to his decision.

"One of the things I do pride myself on, I listen. When the electorate says, `Hey, that's not what we want to do,'" Perry told Houston's ABC affiliate on Monday. "We backed up, took a look at what we did. I understand I work for the people, not the other way around. There was a better way to do that, I realize that now."

Mindful that the legislature rejected the mandate; Perry's remark that "I agreed with their decision" and "I don;t always get it right" might signal, to some people, that he has changed his position with regard to mandating the vaccine. On the other hand, his remarks can also be read as apologetic for obtaining the mandate via EO, of "an error in not having a conversation with the people of the state of Texas" before implementing the mandate.

So you agree with Rick Perry that young girls 12-13 years old should forcibly be vaccinated against STDs without their parents consent? How liberal of you.
