New home for 750-pound woman

AKELAND - Two and half months is a long time to be stuck in the hospital, especially if you don't really have to be there. Yvonne Gallimore has been living at Lakeland Regional Medical Center because she had no place else to go.

Now, she finally does. Gallimore just moved into a duplex provided by the Lakeland Housing Authority. It's a big improvement, but not easy living yet. It has big, French doors, so she can get out quickly in case of an emergency.

"I was glad to get out of there," she said on Monday.

When emergency workers took Gallimore to the hospital a few months ago, they had to take down the bedroom wall of her old place because they couldn't get her out any other way.

After a FOX 13 viewer saw her story, she donated $100,000 to help.

“I just can’t believe that there isn’t a medical issue with overly obese people like this.”

Uhhh...”big bones”?

Triumphant Values, an apt screen name for someone who has such high Christian values. You represent our community excellently.

It is a kind gesture. I just wonder if there were more deserving needy people that it could have went to.

She decided to stuff her face.

What's disgusting is someone else must be bringing the food for her to stuff her face, cleaning up after her, donating all sorts of materials for her to keep herself occupied, and now they still feel sorry for her so they gave her $100,000 and will help put up a new home that she'll never clean or take care of. Is this a great country or what?

They should have put this poor woman on a diet of some kind and gotten her psychiatric help to figure out why she needs to hide behind all this weight. I’m sure there is a beautiful person hiding in there and they need to find her. I wish her luck.

She has lymphedema, see post 16 for link.

Not obesity, or not all obesity. Bad lymphedema is a crippling illness and difficult to treat.

Oh, that is such an awful disease. I was just looking at the picture and thinking that the woman’s face didn’t look at all like a 750 pound woman that didn’t care about her looks. Thanks for posting this information.

I watched a tv show years ago that had a five hundred plus pounder on it. He showed what he ate every day. It was simply amazing. He consumed in excess of 10,000 calories every day by eating entire pizzas, cartons of ice cream, bags of chips, etc. He had zero remorse.

Nonsense.
If you stop putting things in your mouth, and exercise, you will not get fat.

I had thyroid disease and it was hard, but you simply need self control.
Lazy people cannot do the exercise part, but they can stop overeating!

It’s not fat, it’s fluid. The woman has severe chronic lymphedema. The only treatment is draining the fluid or bandaging the affected areas with compressive bandages. It has something to do with abnormal veins and can be present from birth.

The disease is terribly frustrating, can have numerous causes, including being congenital and due to breast cancer, or happen spontaneously after a lymph node biopsy.

I knew a woman who had it, and it had developed to the elephantiasis stage, in just one leg. The rest of her was normal sized. The tissues of the leg had become fibrous-tough, and she and her husband had become used to looking at her toes at frequent intervals, because unpredictably it might cut off blood flow to her lower leg, and she would have only minutes to get to an ER, or lose her leg.

And the worst part was that every day, she had to ask herself the question, “would it just be easier if my leg was amputated?” That sort of thought really eats away at you.

Would have better been spent underwriting gastric bypass surgery.

“She got $100,000.00 but will be living in a Lakeland Housing Authority house?

Couldn’t she buy her own damn house?”

It gets worse if you read the whole story. She’s only living in the housing authority house temporarily, until her brand new Habitat for Humanity house gets finished. They even let her give them input on the design of the house. So, free hospital stay, free temporary housing, free custom-built house, and then $100,000 to boot!

For the life of me, I can’t see why she is allowed to leave the hospital to go anywhere other than a mental institution. We may not be big on involuntary commitment anymore, but if you are 750 lbs, you are by definition an immediate danger to yourself, since you are already in the process of committing suicide!

Well, the story leaves many detailed unrevealed, but it strikes me that the $100,000.00 might not be going directly to the sponger. The new house is being built by Habitat, and they require sweat equity (which in this case is just a horrible visual), and they may being paying someone to contribute to the project.

What really grates on me is that the taxpayers have been supporting this woman for a very long time. Her daughter and 2 grandchildren are moving in with her to the 4-bedroom home, so there is some indication that her daughter is a sponger too.

It would be nice if family, church, and voluntary charity were taking care of this family, but the truth is that the gubmint has stepped-in instead. Will the grandchildren ever work and be productive members of society when all they have ever known is adults collecting disability and someone building a home for you because you are obese? The outlook is bleak.

I am not without sympathy for her medical condition, but we are tapped-out. Multiply this woman by millions and understand why we find ourselves in a boat with little water.
