Obama suggests changing unemployment system (work-sharing, bridge-to-work training)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 9/9/11 | Don Lee and Jim Puzzanghera

In urging Congress to extend jobless benefits, President Obama went beyond short-term aid and called on the country to rethink how it looks at unemployment, recognizing the long-term devastating costs of having so many unproductive people on its hands for long periods.

Specifically, Obama endorsed a work-sharing plan embraced in Europe that averts layoffs by spreading the pain among co-workers, as well as a more controversial bridge-to-work idea that puts people who are on unemployment benefits into training or temporary work that would set them on a path toward regular jobs.

The president also proposed, as part of his $447-billion stimulus bill unveiled Thursday night, a $4,000 tax credit to employers for hiring anybody who has spent more than six months looking for a job.

The White House estimated that this part of Obama's economic stimulus would amount to $49 billion, mostly for extending jobless benefits that would otherwise expire early next year for more than 3 million people.

The president's overall aim is to get more out of unemployment insurance funds in light of the reality of today's economy: Job growth has stalled and the number of people out of work for six months or more has swelled to unprecedented levels.

Some 6 million U.S. workers, or about 43% of the total unemployed, have been without jobs for more than six months, according to federal statistics for last month. Discouraged, many others have dropped out of the labor force. And the longer they remain jobless, the more likely they are to suffer the scarring effects of unemployment that can hurt their earnings permanently.

He'd be right at home in EUrope.

Sadly, he lives here.. in one of the 57 states, Delusional, just south of Delinquent as in Juvenile.

Stripping bare a nation of its promise and industries, all the while clucking away on a dual ToTUS campaign with an ice cream cone in one hand and a golf club the other.

Let me see if I understand this...we have 3 workers that are 100% employed = 300%. Now Barack wants to add a 4th unemployed person into the equation. 300% divided by 4 means now the productive people are only making 75%???
You want to talk about redistribution of wealth, this sounds really scary.
Either all politicians are cut from the same mold, or nobody has the b@lls to slap some sense in Barack’s head.

The guy has completed dissociated from reality.

And he's the freaking President of the United States.

I can see November 2012 from Sarah Palin's front porch.

Do I understand this correctly.

A person of questionable citizenship who has never held a “real” job is giving advice to the nation on job creation???

What am I missing?

Personally, I agree with WorkFare over Welfare, over any work over a handout. My only exception to this would be a dire illness, tragedy, etc.

If I can get a lot of work out of those who receive unemployment checks, then that IS an incentive to find a different job at higher wages.

a goodly portion of the unemployed are hightech skilled college educated workers... just exactly WHAT kind of retraining would that be???

The man is a machine that spits out dumb, failed ideas one after another.

Wonder how long before he realizes that everything he's ever known about how things work is crap, fed to him by all the losers he grew up around.

averts layoffs by spreading the pain among co-workers

So, let's see. I have 4 employees but because of the dead economy, I can only afford 2. But instead of laying anyone off, I cut all 4 to half time?

That way, no one gets unemployment but everyones pay check is cut in half and with only half time hours, they loose benefits.

Yup. That'll do it -

That's exactly what socialism finally accomplishes: redistribute the wealth - then EVERYONE is starving.

Will we survive until next election?

They are intent on destroying this country. They have been intent on it for decades. But this is the first time they had this much power to use. They will not go quietly into the night. They will ramp up the schedule.

WATCH carefully - and read my tag line.

Obama is a freakin moron’

“a $4,000 tax credit to employers for hiring anybody who has spent more than six months looking for a job. “

Tax credits do NOT work as our tax atty. eloquently puts it. The incentive is $4,000 but the workers comp and Obamacare mandatory healthcare negates any tax incentive this clown and his clown masters can come up with. Odumbo is simply trying to save his snake skin for the election.

Work sharing? Wonderful start.

Maybe we can all turn down our thermostats and use the savings to contribute to the unemployed.

Why would I hire someone I don’t need. However, I’m letting Joe go. He can collect unemployment for 6 months and that’s what he’d like to do. It’s winter when we’re slow anyways. In 6 months 7 days, I’ll hire him back and get the credit.

Work sharing by any other name is part-time work.

I was thinking to save on costs we could all just move into dorms at a commune too, and if we all wore the same kind of clothes, like Chairman Mao, we could get them all cheap.

I wonder if he has wife sharing in mind too, and raising the kids in a government creche.

This proposal negates sacrosanct union concept of seniority, it will never fly with unions.

Unions will be exempt, doncha know? sar/

None of them actually work when at their jobs, so this is nothing new to them anyway, it always takes 3 to 4 employess to do one mans job in a union, so what's one more?
