Speaker John Boehner has rejected Obama’s request to address a joint session of Congress on September 7th to discuss his jobs plan. Boehner has asked that Obama consider the following night instead.
According to Politico, Boehner said in a letter to Obama that Sept. 8th would be better “so we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks.”
It is important to note that on September 7, the GOP Presidential candidates will have a debate that is sponsored by NBC and Politico that will air on MSNBC. NBC and Politico announced earlier today that they would air the debate and not show the address to Congress.

Like the others on this thread, I’m happy that Boehner didn’t immediately capitulate. This doesn’t mean he won’t EVENTUALLY capitulate.
And then we’ll be more heartbroken in that we thought the pubs had taken a stand.
They ought to come out and state that the GOP debate, the premiere of the great Rick Perry btw, had been planned well in advance. They should say that a President really wanting to come together as Obamer says wouldn’t choose to step all over the opposition party in such a rude fashion.
We might not be as smart as the Blue Blood Ruling Class out here in la-la land across the fruited plains, but we are forever balancing our times, meetings and priorities. IE...WE GET THIS...even the wishy-washy moderates would see that the prez doing this was not at all fair.
But they’re pubs, with perfectly coiffed hairs, nails polished to perfection to better reach across the aisle. They’ll not take a stand so y’all quit setting yourself up for disappointment.
NBC said they’d show the debate too. THAT seems much more shocking than the somewhat shocking Boehner response.
I wonder if any president has ever had this many joint session speeches. I can only remember Bush doing his just after 9/11. Maybe my hatred for Obama and his narcissism has fogged my memory...

I didn't disagree with Boehner's asking for a delay until Thursday. That's perfectly in order -- as you note.
But I did disagree with FSE's notion that Boehner should refuse to allow a joint session altogether.
Some people are never happy...if Boehner had had declined he would’ve lost. Boehner played it just right !
The Capitol and the White House are separate buildings for a reason. Obama is abusing this privilege, and we all know why.

Good observation, kabar! They sacrifice a pawn (the date) and get the bishop they really wanted: the joint session itself.
Boehner should make the White House come up with a forged letter where Boehner agrees to the date before the public announcement.
That’s the only kind of substantiation the White House has EVER done for claims it has made. Forgeries. One lie after another.
This might not be the same old ideas. He has something big up his sleeve to want a joint session and the attention of the public. WPA the Second to improve the infrastructure. Two birds with one stone. If it’s not something big, then it’s the usual sheer politics and posturing.
Actually, there’s more than the debate - there is another event taking place at the Reagan Library on the 7th.
