Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was
The Telegraph ^ | August 28, 2011 | Toby Harnden

Posted on 08/28/2011 11:43:55 AM PDT by Faith

The truth is that the dire warning beforehand suited both politicians and journalists. Just as with the minor earthquake that shook the east coast last week causing no loss of life and virtually no damage, Irene became a huge story because it was where the media lived. For politicians, Irene was a chance to either make amends or appear in control. The White House sent out 25 Irene emails to the press on Saturday alone.

I’m sure the media wanted to show how heroic Obama was in this crisis, compared to Bush’s alleged bungling of Hurricane Katrina.

I agree with you. And I want to emphasize the word alleged. Bush didn't bungle Katrina but the perception persists because that's the way the media made it seem. It was the Governor of Louisiana and the local New Orleans officials who failed miserably. But sometimes perceptions are more powerful than reality.

all future hurricanes will be mismanaged.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

OR

All future potential hurricanes will not only be mismanaged, but be grossly overmanaged.

When enough businesses lose money by premature shutdowns, as well as hotel/motel patrons who are denied refunds the public will get demonstrative.

Then the insurance industry will come full bore with all kinds of insurance they can pawn off on us.

How about the people that have been paying into FORCED home owner insurance and the two (almost) incidents on the East Coast will cost them (insurance) nary a sou as they are considered unnatural to the area.

Without seeing the grill or taillights, I would guess ‘64. I think the rear door was like that on that year.

It doesn’t matter how much carbon was used, as long as everyone bought their allotment of carbon credits.

Easily the best graphic from this whole past few days of hurricane hype.

Its a 62. The 63 was far more sleek and rounded.

Just like the 1st responders getting locked out of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 events so all the politicians can be there instead.

Are you kidding? Mayor Bloominidiot has even outlawed God from being at the event. So I guess the first responders are in good company.

It is definitely not a '62. The molding on the car in question is too low. '62 had it up by the greenhouse.

It is definitely a '64 after looking at some pictures. '63 had louvers at the back near the tail lights. '64 didn't.

1965 was the big square redesign.

I loved the 1964 Galaxie 500. Some folks I knew had a green one that was beautiful. We had a new 1964 Fairlane 500, cream colored with that red thing down the side. It was pretty lovely, but I liked the Galaxie better. On both I loved those round taillights. Later we got a 1967 Custom 500. It wasn’t nearly as nice.

This is just like my mom's favorite car she ever owned. We took it to France and back and then my dad sold it for a 66 and she never forgave him for it.

Between this event and the Great Virginia Quake of 2011, I don’t know how people in the mid-Atlantic will ever recover.

IIRC, the “Galaxy 500” was the upgrade and the plain “galaxy” was the plain version - less chrome, no whitewalls, smaller hubcaps.

My uncle, a Ford man for most of his years had a in succession a ‘57, a ‘62 and a ‘64. Somewhere in there he had a Fairlane 500. ‘63 I think.

Here's the plain '63 Galaxie. Note the spelling of "Galaxie" instead of Galaxy. Never noticed that.

No more calls, please - we have a winner!!!
I am still LOL-ing after 5 minutes!

I’d love to post this on FB, but I’d get
more crap from peeps who are outraged that
some of us think coverage and warnings were
a bit over the top.

I’m gonna steal it, anyway, thanks!

You are correct on the spelling. I remember when Aurora made an HO slot car just like the red convertible. It was the last thing I gave up of my childhood toys keeping it well into high school. My mom still talks about her red 63.

You'll want to eyeball the '62 T-Bird up on the showroom floor in post 29. Were I a rich man, that car would be one of the cars in my collection.
