Core of Hurricane Irene Starts Coming Ashore in North Carolina

NAGS HEAD, N.C. —Irene became the first hurricane since 2008 to make landfall in the continental United States on Saturday morning when it came ashore just east of Cape Lookout in North Carolina. It was the first stop for a storm that, though weakened to a Category 1, is expected to lumber slowly and soggily up the East Coast, bringing flooding rains to a dozen states.

Debris floated along the roads after Hurricane Irene hit Topsail Island in North Carolina on Friday. More Photos »

Shingles and pieces of siding began to peel off beach houses in Nags Head, about 100 miles to the northeast, as howling winds and sheets of rain signaled the storm’s approach. On the mainland side of Currituck County, several business owners reconsidered their plans to remain open when they woke to car-rattling gusts of wind. At the Tobacco Barn, which had intended to open, Angela White, an owner, and several others were fighting a near-flattening downpour to bolt plywood boards over the front door. All bridges to the Outer Banks had been closed by Saturday morning.

Hurricane Irene has officially begun coming ashore in North Carolina, hopefully this means less severe conditions such as a Tropical Storm and rainfall in some areas. The storm is currently identified as Category 1, likely to weaken with time.

One death already. A man was killed when he went outside to see what was happening. A large branch broke off a tree, hit him and killed him.

People were told to stay indoors. I guess he didn’t hear that.

Yeah East Coasters get all hysterical if it rains to much or snows to much. Surprised at NC and SC. They are use to this sort of weather.

Texans are jealous, WE NEED THE RAIN!

Or more "headwinds" on which he can blame his failed economic plans.

It is the track that’s the big deal, not so much the storm since it weakened contrary to forecasts.

However, if it actually held together, this would have been very, very bad even if it hit just as a 2.

Got lucky again. The storm surge still could be a real problem due to the size of the storm.

I'm not gonna watch the hysterics on the news. It's down to a 1, probably be downgraded to a TS later today then a TD tomorrow.

I'm sure a few morons will die from drowning most likely surfing idiots. Other than that total waste of resources and tax dollars.

I remember at least several where it turned out to be mostly just a dump of rain on you, because the storm died down fast immediately after coming ashore. However, the bigger surprise for me came regarding the D.C. Earthquake. Living in the Marlyand area, earthquakes definitely aren’t expected there as much as other areas like say, the San Andreas Fault or Alaska.

You’re forgetting all the school cancellations and park shutdowns. Frankly, I can see a lot of kids enjoying an extra weekend of summer because of this.

The core’s ashore and it’s a bit of a bore.

It happened during a number of tropical storms. There always has to be some person who fails to remember rules like “Don’t play in flooded waters”, or something of the sort. Either way, there’s plenty of sad, otherwise preventable deaths that just happen sometimes.

If true, it might be a dud by the time it hits farther north.

This storm was a Cat 12 when Obama inherited it, and he has managed to get it down to a Cat 1. There’s still work to do, but the progress he’s made is an absolute miracle.

I just came from NOAA’s Buoy data page. I did not see a wind gust over 60knots .Wind speeds ranged from 22 to 45 kts. Barometric pressures were low but wind readings did not indicate hurricane strength. Anyone have an opinon?

I'm surprised it's down to a cat. 1 already.

Latest forcast track puts a category 1 hurricane's eye over my house 9am Sunday. By that time I'm thinking it won't even be a category 1.

We have severe storms with 65 mph winds here sometimes and when the sirens go off there they are outside walking around.

Even when I’m at work and a Code Black is called and we have to move to the center of the store people ignore our warning. Sad thing is if they get hurt because of their stupidity they would sue the store. It never ends.

Don't count this one out. This storm is on same track that Hurricane Carol was on in 1954-see below. After NC, it gained strength again before hitting US. Interestingly, that Hurricane started Aug 25.
