Suspending CCW is not the problem. It is knowing the government will find an excuse to not end the suspension that is the problem.

Comparing New Orleans to Mississippi is an unfair comparison. Louisiana took care of its own. New Orleans is a major city. The suburbs and parishes surrounding New Orleans took care of their own. Parts of New Orleans took care of their own. New Orleans is just a different animal so the MSM could exploit a small number of incidences in a big way. The surrounding areas had their own incidences that they dealt with. The per capita looting (not that I’ve seen any numbers) felt about the same in the rural suburbs as in the city. It’s just not news when Joe gets his lawn mower stolen from his garage as opposed to a Wally World being looted.

(CCW permits invalid for duration)

Please stop spreading this disinformation.

The Governor's office issued this statement when it declared the initial state of emergency for the eastern NC counties:

This order is adopted pursuant to my powers under Article 1 of Chapter 166A of the General Statutes and under Article 36A of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes. It does not trigger the limitations on weapons in G.S. § 14-288.7 or impose any limitation on the consumption, transportation, sale or purchase of alcoholic beverages.

In NC, we deal with this all the time when a state of emergency is declared. Some idiot jurisdictions like King continue to be a problem, but the 2nd Amendment groups already have active suits there. I think we will eventually change our law (G.S. § 14-288.7) but until then, the Governor can just state that the declaration does not trigger that particular statute.

Yep - really nuts. After Katrina, New Orleans police started confiscating weapons - that left them in the hands of of the bad guys (remember stories of folks shooting at rescue helicopters...).

In Mississippi, the y left our guns alone. I had my .357 on my hip (without a CCW, so technically illegal) and was putting a sign at the entrance to our street that said: Armed Community - looters WILL BE SHOT. A Florida Trooper cruised by, paused to look me over and read the sign, then touched the brim of his hat and drove off.

Knowing that difference in gun philosophy, one might ask how much looting they saw in Mississippi - I saw none on the news. Makes a case for INSISTING those with weapons carry them, CCW or not, during this type emergency - it keeps the rabble rousers in line.

“...most people pull together in times like these.”

Yes, unlike animals who often turn against each other, ‘human beings’ will help each other during a crisis.

Perfect example would be the aftermath of Katrina down in New Orleans, i.e. looting, robbery, rapes etc.

I DO! I have plenty of weapons, and ammo with which to feed them, too.

I am of the opinion that when the day comes that we have to hide our weapons from the government... that is the day we had better start USING them.

Several changes were made in the CCW laws by the legislature.
Not familiar with all the particulars but I think this was one of the items.
IIRC the new revisions take effect Dec.1.

Many have commented, of late, that when the SHTF, all of us FReepers are going to rounded up as part of HS’s crackdown of terrorists/anarchists.

I respectfully disagree.

The idea that they can "suspend" a right that is clearly stated in the U.S. Constitution IS the problem. They are conditioning us to believe that our rights are granted at the whim of government officials.

I'd love to see the wailing and gnashing of teeth if they suspended a "right" that is not clearly stated in the Constitution... like the "right to an abortion". LOL

I agree completely. Shades of New Orleans. Past time for the citizens of NC to file a lawsuit.

Hey Scotsman, do you know if we have any such provision in our CCW law here?

If so, we need to get working on taking care of it now, before Gov. Haley is gone.

North Carolina § 14-288.7 does a lot more (when invoked) than just suspend CCW. It suspends ALL POSSESSION OF FIREARMS outside of your own property. No CCW or Open Carry allowed. No possession off your own property, period.

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, it is unlawful for any person to transport or possess off his own premises any dangerous weapon or substance in any area:

(1) In which a declared state of emergency exists; or

(2) Within the immediate vicinity of which a riot is occurring.

(b) This section does not apply to persons exempted from the provisions of G.S. 14‑269 with respect to any activities lawfully engaged in while carrying out their duties.

(c) Any person who violates any provision of this section is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. (1969, c. 869, s. 1; 1993, c. 539, s. 192; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24, s. 14(c).)

You need to look at the people who live in those areas. There is no comparison.
