Hurricane Irene Live Thread

Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.

Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Cape Lookout weather station still reporting:

Wind steady at over 50 kts for last 4 hours; highest gusts to 68 kts 2 hours ago. Pressure now reporting as 28.38". Note that Irene is at 28.11"

Fayetteville NC here. Was getting bored watched the news feed and channel flicked and hit on it just as the people were getting sick. Of course had to watch it to the end.

Oh, the Hurricane - just gusty winds right now. My weather station is reading 75.3 deg, 79% hum, and 29.49 inHG.

Yep - that pressure drop is awesome. Same chart in is progress further up the road (er, if there was a road) on Hatteras Island at the next buoy in line.

That station is reporting more often - 61 kt gust (peaked at 66 about an hour ago).

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel got a 52Kt (55mph) wind gust at 7:06AM, steady at 32, gusting to 40 now, per the NOAA station on the bridge.

Beaufort, NC station: minimum pressure 28.16”.
Maximum wind gust (only) 53 kts (less than hurricane strength) about 3 hours ago. Now getting NE winds of 14 kts, gusting to 23.
