MAP OF THE DAY: New York City Hurricane Evacuation Zones
Dina Spector
Aug. 25, 2011, 1:44 PM
As hurricane Irene barrels toward the east coast, thousands of residents have already been evacuated from the coastal villages off North Carolina. Now New York, New Jersey, and Delaware officials are preparing for the possibility of mass evacuations.
New York city officials are still monitoring the storm and won't make any calls until Friday afternoon at the earliest whether to evacuate areas of the city susceptible to flooding, including Battery Park City in Manhattan, Coney Island in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway in Queens.
We dont have enough information yet to make that call, Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference in Queens this morning. The timing is a bit up in the air, as it is with all these things. Sometime on Friday, late in the day. How many depends on how severe we think the storm is going to be. "
Earlier today, the mayor called the citys elected officials and its state legislative delegation to City Hall for a briefing with police and emergency-management officials, according to Bloomberg.
If circumstances do reach worst case scenario, New York City's Office of Emergency Management has hurricane contingency plans in place. Each evacuation zone represents varying threat levels of coastal flooding:
Residents in Zone A face the highest risk of flooding from a hurricane's storm surge. Zone A includes all low-lying coastal areas and other areas that could experience storm surge in ANY hurricane that makes landfall close to New York City.

This could be a disaster for NYC. The Lowe's are all sold out of Cane supplies by me. Here is a little humor to muddle through.

If the storm follows the track shown on that map, at the strength indicated, the Outer Banks might very well get ‘modified’.

That depends. How well does your Spork-Weasel breathe under water?

Wow, Jamaica Bay, Brooklyn and Queens could really take it on the chin with this one. I guess small deviations from predicted course will make a huge difference, i.e. how much time over land versus water.

I should have said I gotta lay over in Atlanta Sunday night.

It looks like Wall Street is in the direct path. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
First, a warning earthquake, then the cleansing wind...it's all kinda Biblical...

My uncle has a home on the Outer Banks in the Kill Devil Hills area. His daughter (my cousin) lives in Suffolk, VA. I'm hoping he has evacuated from the house in NC and moved to my cousin's place.

As soon as it gets near DC, it gets downgraded.
Typical.

Reserve a room tonight in the Marriott (the new one) at the end of the rental car facility train line. It’s by the convention center AT the train station.
It’s the best hotel within easy reach of ATL-Hartsfield.
And of course you have up until 6 PM of that evening to cancel ;-)
Plan ahead!

As the canyon of skyscrapers kinda make the wind velocity dramatically increase on the streets, look for alot of blown out windows downtown. Mondays commute could be very dangerous.
Subways will be stored above ground, probably tunnels flooded, sewer manhole covers blown out on the streets.
And I’m sure that all aircraft will be removed from Reagon, Dulles, Baltimore, Philly, Newark, JFK, Laguardia, Teterboro, Stewart, Hartford, Providence, so next week will be a total travel clusterf*** zoo

Most hurricanes here are a non event - downed trees, power lines, etc. New York City is vulnerable, if and only if a Cat 4 or better storm surge moves in exactly between Rockaway Point and Sandy Hook. This puts a "cork in the drain" and New York Harbor, upper and lower, back up up into Newark Bay, the Lower Hudson the East River and Jamaica Bay.

"If the storm follows the track shown on that map, at the strength indicated, the Outer Banks might very well get modified." The area where the Herbet C Bonner Bridge is located is the result of a "Modification" when a Hurricane cut the island in two in 1846 then "Isabel" cut Hatteras Island in two in 2003.

When Hurricane Ike hit downtown Houston, all the windows on the windward side of hotels and office buildings were blown out. Houston is 65 miles from the Gulf. It’s amazing what the wind will do.

I'm glad I live where there are no hurricanes, earthquakes, mudslides and almost no tornadoes. I will shovel snow as a trade-off for that any day. :-))
To: frithguild
Many thanks for the info...
Question: what's the range between hig and low tides in NY harbor..upper and lower..if the surge hits at high tide...using your "cork in a bottle" analogy..it's MUCH worse, corect?
