Each summer, animal activists travel across the country to meet and discuss the latest topics of the animal rights movement. This year, animal agriculture was once again the focus. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) hosted its annual Taking Action for Animals Conference in Washington, D.C. on July 15-18, and Farm Animal Rights Movements Animal Rights 2011 Conference (AR 2011) was held two weeks later on July 21-25 in Los Angeles. Both events claimed to have record-breaking attendance, attracting a combined total of more than 1,600 activists from around the world, ranging in age from 20-60 years old.
Securing rights for farm animals and the promotion of a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle to the mainstream public were hot topics at both meetings. Attendees were given tips on how to utilize social media, create undercover videos and craft effective messages to share their views with others. Speakers and exhibitors also encouraged aspiring activists to hold demonstrations, signature drives for ballot initiatives and leafleting campaigns.
The largest activist groups attended and sponsored both meetings, although messaging differed between audiences. Nathan Runkle, Executive Director of Mercy For Animals, Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing, and Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary, spoke at both meetings. They encouraged a more aggressive, physical approach to eliminating animal agriculture

They want an end to all domestic animals. You can eat twigs and grass IF no wild animal wants it.

With keynote speakers HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle and Congressman Jim Moran (D-Va.).
Ping.
Communists , aka Environmentalists, with the United Nations Agenda 21 want you off your own land.
environMENTALists and animal rights activists (ARs) are just different arms on the same octopus. They want us off our land, and dead. ALL of them are anti-property rights.
I don’t agree with ending all killing of animals for food.
I enjoy a good steak, chicken and duck and a good pork roast.
However, I want decent conditions for animal husbandry for many reasons. Not the least is safe food handling so the meat we eat is safe. I buy meat whenever I can at Wholefoods or get Kosher meats who have higher standards for animal production and killing than the general meat companies.
Sure, the meat costs a little more, but it is safer and actually it tastes better cause all those antibiotics, etc aren’t in it.
I don’t want to be a vegan. But I want decent conditions for animals and safe food. If the general meat production companies can do that fine, if not, they should be exposed for bad and unsafe production.
I dont mind anybody that wants to be a vegan.
What does bother me is vegans who want to make everybody else become vegans thru force of law. ......
so they get rid of all the factory farms that are providing cheap poultry and eggs and meat for the poor in the cities of the third world.
Yes, compassion for the chicken and ignore the malnourished street kids.
I think every family should have to raise its own food...every mouthful of meat, vegetables, fruit and milk. It would be totally safe that way. It would also be the cure for obesity.
1600 people think they can tell a global population to eat tofu?
I think I’d rather eat activists. They probably taste just like chicken.
i agree. I have a neighbor who is a vegan , her husband is not and on his birthday, she takes him out to dinner for a steak! ha.
Not a bad idea, if somewhat impractical..however, there is a new movement I read about in the WSj that says most every city has enough empty lots, and flat roof tops to raise vegetables to feed the whole city....Hmmm?
yeah, maybe the teenagers could do that instead of gang banging!
Those who don’t want to be good Americans should go back to Germany.
“Vegetarian” Ancient Indian word for ‘lousy hunter’. Plus they smell funny when they’re near you in the health nut store.
"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.~ Anthony BourdainTo me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.
Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.
Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."
Thanks.
You should be aware that the misnamed "Humane Society of the United States: HSUS" (an entity not to be confused with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: ASPCA), an the scam shop called "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: PeTA) are your enemies.
