American Axle to Close Plant in Blow to UAW (Unions strike again!)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 08/18/11 | Jeff Bennett

DETROIT–American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. dealt the United Auto Workers a second blow Thursday by announcing the closure of its New York gear-making plant after union rank-and-file members failed to ratify a new contract late last month.

The Cheektowaga plant, employing about 100 hourly and salaried workers, will be shut sometime after Feb. 25, American Axle spokesman Christopher Son said. The announcement comes a month after the company said it will close its Detroit plant after workers there failed to agree to wage cuts. That closure will throw about 300 people out of work.

Leave it to those idiots to vote themselves out of a job. Give Barry and the NLRB another term, and there will be no manufacturing left in the country.

NLRB will probably tell them they don’t have the right to close the plant.

Given how they handled the auto bailouts expect them to take over the company and hand ownership to the UAW.

That's really the way things are headed. If Obama and crew had been in charge Buggy Whip Maker's Union members would still be making the big bucks by government order.

Yep. It's in the book:

The Unification Board shall then license the use of such patents and copyrights to all applicants, equally and without discrimination, for the purpose of eliminating monopolistic practices, discarding obsolete products and making the best available to the whole nation. Every formerly patented product shall be known by a new name and sold by all manufacturers under the same name, such name to be selected by the Unification Board. All private trademarks and brand names are hereby abolished.

Point Five. Economic reality 101. Unions destroy every business and/or industry that they get involved with. Join a union if you want, but the day the business gets unionized if the day they start to die.

On February 26, 2008, approximately 3600 AAM employees went on strike for three months to protest a proposed wage and benefit cut. Strike ended reducing workers’ hourly wage from $28 to $14 and cut benefits.

After 3 years the company wants more, workers already gave back 50%.

Kind of sad.
In the “old days” that was “Chevrolet Gear and Axle” and had a couple thousand workers....

Are you saying a company can’t keep trying to negotiate wages for new contract renewals. Nobody makes them work there. If it is too low then leave.

“...it will close its Detroit plant after workers there failed to agree to wage cuts. “

Sounds like they agreed to a pretty drastic wage cut when they failed to agree to wage cuts.

This sounds like someone trying to make sure all employees still have a job rather than laying folks off.

Will you all not be happy til all ‘workers’ earn a buck an hour?

This is a race to the bottom, third world status.

You people are clueless.

Well, that's a buck more than these folks will be making now.

And, apparently, it wasn't enough.

If the plant was making money, American Axle wouldn't be closing the plant.

I’d love to see the look on your face and your reactions when Big Dick comes in and undercuts your job by 50%.

Someone will always work for less. It’s a race to the bottom.

Those union morons will be standing in the unemployment line bitching because the factory closed down an sent THEIR jobs overseas, believing all the time that the company could continue to pay their outrageous benefits.
