Perry '01 - 'Fox's vision for an open border is a vision I embrace'
The Washington Times ^ | June 21, 2011 | Kerry Picket

Posted on 08/13/2011 6:23:25 PM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Texas Governor Rick Perry, Republican, reportedly being pushed by Texas lawmakers to throw his hat into the GOP presidential ring, very often touts his background on border security, but what about the Mr. Perry's past remarks and actions about immigration and the border? He is currently supporting a bill that was just passed by the Texas Senate that would give greater power to police officers to question those who are detained about their legal status. The AP reports:

The 19-12 vote early Wednesday came after nearly eight hours of emotional debate in which Democrats railed against the bill as racist and a tool to harass Latinos.

The bill pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry now goes to the House for consideration, where it is expected to easily pass. The Republican super-majority in the House passed a similar version during the regular session.

Perry and supporters say the bill will help police fight crime committed by illegal immigrants. But opponents, including law enforcement chiefs in the state's largest cities and immigrant rights activists, say the measure will allow rogue officers to target Hispanics.

However, Governor Perry appeared to be talking differently about the border when he first came to office. In a 2001 Border Summit speech, Governor Perry described to fellow border governors and others in attendance the amount of poverty :

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

Yeah, the headline about supporting open borders is misleading. He actually says he wants it so that Mexicans stay home.

But he signed a state DREAM act into law. There is no getting aroud that. He calls young illegals “young Texans.” And while claiming to support a variety of tough state immigration laws, he apparently didn’t really throw his muscle behind them.

He is most likely a leftwinger on immigration, just like Bush was.

I think he's talking about removing impediments to cross border trade. Though the statement is badly phrased, the part in bold tells the whole story.

Perry believes the exact same things as Obama about illegal aliens. Only deport them if they commit serious felonies. Otherwise treat them the same as US citizens, by giving them welfare and college tuition.

Perry = Obama

I’ve guess I’ve set my sights too high: I don’t want a professional “politician” as my president or representative or senator or ANYTHING ever again. They all have a good rap and good political instincts, and I simply won’t trust that kind of person ever again.

I don’t care what they’re saying to me now: are they always saying the same thing to everyone else, and have they always said the same thing? That is the question. They have professional moves for changing their stripes, and I’m through with such deviousness.

Well, once they enter a race they become a professional politician. Actually Perry is a businessman who’s brought more economic growth to our state than has been brought to any other state in the Union or even more so than a combination of the many states. He’s not a skull and bones slick shyster lawyer, just an agri-business guy by trade. He’s a son of the soil, and the salt of the earth.

I’m think Perry won’t have good poll numbers once he goes through the vetting process. But he is better than Romney.

80 percent is hard core Conservative? Not in my book. Why is he not 100 percent? Pro-baby killer? Gay marriage lover? something has got to be pulling down his numbers.

What's your point, Clairity? "On The Issues" says someone is a "Hard Core Conservative", therefore it's true? "On the Issues" gives Lindsey Graham the same rating they give Perry. Given that FACT, will you be endorsing Lindsey Graham for POTUS any time soon?

Rick Perry is a Hard-Core Conservative.

Lindsey Graham is a Hard-Core Conservative.

That statement is indefensible.

Only to narrow-minded people who jump to conclusions and don't bother to know what they are talking about!

Check out the details and get back to us.

The headline in this case is a bit misleading, once you read the actual statement:

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

Sounds more about Mexico fixing its own problems with poverty and drug cartels, than with welcoming unrestricted illegal crossings.

Windflier: “I can’t go on......I get too upset talking about this.”

It really pisses me off, too. I’m a Christian, so I try to follow the law. What I’m saying is, it goes beyond simply wanting to be a good citizen. I literally don’t want to disappoint the Lord by being a lawbreaker. With that in mind, don’t ask me how I could ever open up a roofing, concrete, or other construction company, because I simply wouldn’t be able to survive. My competitors would undercut me with illegal labor.

Government should be protecting good, law abiding citizens, not making it easier for lawbreakers. Yet, that’s exactly what they’re doing on so many issues, immigration included. It seems like good people don’t get a fair shake in this country any more.
