Perry '01 - 'Fox's vision for an open border is a vision I embrace'
The Washington Times ^ | June 21, 2011 | Kerry Picket

Posted on 08/13/2011 6:23:25 PM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Texas Governor Rick Perry, Republican, reportedly being pushed by Texas lawmakers to throw his hat into the GOP presidential ring, very often touts his background on border security, but what about the Mr. Perry's past remarks and actions about immigration and the border? He is currently supporting a bill that was just passed by the Texas Senate that would give greater power to police officers to question those who are detained about their legal status. The AP reports:

The 19-12 vote early Wednesday came after nearly eight hours of emotional debate in which Democrats railed against the bill as racist and a tool to harass Latinos.

The bill pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry now goes to the House for consideration, where it is expected to easily pass. The Republican super-majority in the House passed a similar version during the regular session.

Perry and supporters say the bill will help police fight crime committed by illegal immigrants. But opponents, including law enforcement chiefs in the state's largest cities and immigrant rights activists, say the measure will allow rogue officers to target Hispanics.

However, Governor Perry appeared to be talking differently about the border when he first came to office. In a 2001 Border Summit speech, Governor Perry described to fellow border governors and others in attendance the amount of poverty :

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

Can of worms? Nah...we eat our own on FR from time to time; but this open discussion is always good. There was one earlier about Palin resigning in Alaska; it got heated as well. Point is, these things need to be discussed and understood and ironed out.

Trump was right.

How’s that “free trade” thing working for American jobs?

Perot was right too. Ahead of his time.

"Perry's every deviation from conservative principles,"

Your statement is COMPLETELY FALSE.

Rick Perry is a Hard-Core Conservative.

I can’t bring myself to support Perry because of his stance on illegals.

Of course I would vote for him in a general election against Obama but if elected he is not going to change the direction of the government on many issues important to conservatives.

Because your jpeg SAYS SO!

Weak....his record does not support your contention, no matter how hard you spin it.

I wouldn’t call using his own words and positions to expose him as bashing but bringing the truth to light.

This would be unfair only if it were based on rumor and hearsay. But these are his own words and not taken out of context.

It just amazes me that the many freepers DO NOT UNDERSTAND what they read! READ THAT ARTICLE AGAIN! Instead of flashing through it going, yeah, yeah, yeah, the democrats are right, READ THE WORDS THAT THEY SAID!

I lived for five years on the Black Gap Game Wildlife Management Area! I crossed the border to all my grocery shopping over there because it was cheaper! Guess what I bought there!

CHEERIOS and RICE CRISPIES
GENERAL MILLS FLOUR
FOLGERS COFFEE
IMPERIAL BRAND SUGAR
LIBBY’S CANNED AND FROZEN FOODS
ONE A DAY VITAMINS
Virtually almost any brand name I get in the grocery store here.

The very masa Mexican nationals make their tamales out of is produced by Pillsbury and General Mills.

Last year Texas exported to Mexico $57 BILLION dollars worth of goods!

What do you not understand about the words, I embraCE, AS LONG AS MEXICO’S CITIZENS TO NOT FEEL COMPELLED TO CROSS THE BORDERS TO FIND THAT OPPORTUNITY? C’mon now guys read each word...now tell me what that means!

C’mon guys, read this piece: At the same time we must continue to deepen our economic ties, expanding opportunities for Mexican and U.S. companies to do business on both sides of the border. Do you understand our companies having an opportunity to do business in Mexico. IS THAT ROCKET SCIENTIST LANGUAGE? What about it do you not comprehend?

Now read this. IS IT A LIE? “Texas has long enjoyed a unique identity, an identity forged by an independent spirit, and the convergence of many different peoples.” There were Mexicans helping defend the Alamo. Ever heard of Juan Abamillo, Juan A. Badillo, Carlos Espalier, Gregorio Esparza, Antonio Fuentes, and Andrés Nava that died at the Alamo?

We have a 1200 mile long border with our neighbor Mexico. Texas an US good cross it every freaking day.

And just because the democrats want to yourselves to crucify Perry with THEIR PROPAGANDA you are following along with them like little sheeple!

How about “If you are in this country illegaly, you cannot participate.”

What is it about “ILLEGAL” that you people don’t understand? Every government service, insurance rates, hospitals, EVERYTHING is more expensive to cover the costs of illegals.

Why can I not break the law? Huh?

OMG. Rick Perry made a speech advocating a safe border, with fundamental problems addressed? And he used the word OPEN regarding such border?

Dammit, that’s it. I am done with the Republican party.

And Sarah Palin said earlier this week should could vote for He Who Must Not Be Named.

And Ronald Reagan appointed that liberal puke Sandra Day O’Connor to the SCOTUS.

I’m done being a Republican doggonnit.

(sarcasm off)
