Rick Perry 'to run in 2012' as rivals hold Iowa debate

Texas Governor Rick Perry will join the race to become Republican presidential nominee in 2012, US media say.

Mr Perry is expected to announce his candidacy in Iowa on Saturday, reports said. A spokesman said Mr Perry would make his intentions "very clear".

The news came as eight Republican rivals were preparing to hold the third debate of the 2012 race in the early primary state of Iowa on Thursday.

Mitt Romney hopes to cement his front-runner status in the Ames debate.

Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman and others will vie to become his chief challenger, analysts say.

The candidates hope to win the Republican nomination to face President Barack Obama in the November 2012 general election.

Mr Perry, the hard-right conservative firebrand governor of Texas, is expected to make a formal announcement on Saturday, the day most of his rivals take part in the Iowa straw poll in Ames.

Analysts are describing the move as an effort to upstage his rivals taking part in the poll.

The Republican field has been slow to take shape this year, although the first balloting will not be held until February in Iowa.

I'm not as excited by this as I thought I would be. He has a number of good points. But all in all, he can't touch Bachmann. She proved it once and for all with her "debt ceiling" vote. She is one of us, and she's not one to cave or get her "ass in line" when the GOP establishment barks. I am really disappointed with Perry's NAFTA involvement and the trans-Texas super highway. He's "good" but just not "great". Bachmann is truly "great".

Knocking all the Repub candidates is why we didn't have a winner the last time.

Please restrain yourself. The enemy is laughing.

The GOP establishment is pretty slow to catch on. Its a whole new era in politics and they’re still running a 2000 election.

Governor Goodhair very well make a good President. I think in the short term he will steadily increase his numbers up to 2nd place and lose New Hampshire to Romney, then will walk away with all of the other states after that.

With the nomination in hand, he defeats Obama 281 to 257.

Bachmann is truly "great".

Yes, she is. But I don't think she can win in the general. Just my opinion, but I don't see how she picks up the independents or moderate GOP votes.

Bachmann and Palin are great conservatives, but they each have the same major flaw. They just haven't been in the big leagues long enough. This is not an insurmountable problem, of course, but if they had both been ten year veterans, they'd have the same amount of issues that ... anyone does with a decade long record to run on.

Obama snuck past, for a lot of very superficial and fundamentally stupid reasons. Republicans, especially in 2012, won't get that same consideration.

So, Perry's got flaws, but he's also battle tested. It's not reasonable to expect that any other politician would come through a ten year stretch with no ugly compromises under their belts.

No thank you, I believe I'll continue to speak my mind and expose Perry for the RINO that he is.

“We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, ‘we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there. And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers."

Bachmann and Palin are great conservatives, but they each have the same major flaw. They just haven't been in the big leagues long enough.

Palin has spent twenty years in public service, serving in one executive capacity or another. How many more years does she need to be in office to reach your bar?

So, Perry's got flaws, but he's also battle tested.

How so? He's never faced a challenger of any note or worth. Certainly not a conservative challenger. He's won by being the lesser of two (or three) evils in every race of the last ten years.

Perry was a ‘Rat until he switched parties in 1989.

Gov. Goodhair even supported Al-gore in the 1988 Democratic presidential primaries as chairman of the Gore campaign in Texas!

No sale.

OH NO! Will Governor Rick Perry of Texas be the PRO-SHARI’A candidate?

The Texas Governor has an unusually cozy relationship with the Muslim community.

ATTENTION BNI READERS: Please share this story with your Facebook or other online friends. It’s pretty much under the radar so far.

Grendel Report – Rick Perry has made a name for himself in the last few weeks by palling around with some radical evangelical Christian figures who are openly hostile to Islam, and have even, in one notable case, called for a ban on Muslim immigration to the U.S. But it turns out that the Texas governor has had surprisingly warm, constructive relations with at least one group of Muslims over the years.

Perry is a friend of the Aga Khan, the religious leader of the Ismailis, a sect of Shia Islam that claims a reported 15 to 20 million adherents worldwide. Sprouting from that friendship are at least two cooperation agreements between the state of Texas and Ismaili institutions, including a far-reaching program to educate Texas schoolchildren about Islam. That’s a partnership that has already prompted a bit of grumbling in far-right corners of the blogosphere and could conceivably become a primary issue if, as expected, Perry enters the presidential race.

The Aga Khan, who claims a direct lineage to the Prophet Mohammed, controls a vast international network of business and philanthropic ventures; he is not a reclusive spiritual thinker, but rather a fabulously rich jet-setter. Perry met the Aga Khan during a 2000 family trip to Paris (the Aga Khan owns a large estate, Aiglemont, north of the city), the Austin American-Statesman reported in 2008. Two years later, Perry spoke warmly at a dinner in Houston hosted by the Aga Khan. Over the years the governor attended other Ismaili events in Texas, culminating in a pair of formal agreements.

One, in 2009, provides for cooperation between Texas and the Aga Khan’s organizations in the “fields of education, health sciences, natural disaster preparedness and recovery, culture

Aga Khan & Rick Perry

and the environment.” Perry was quoted at the official Ismaili website as saying at the signing ceremony that “traditional Western education speaks little of the influence of Muslim scientists, scholars, throughout history, and for that matter the cultural treasures that stand today in testament to their wisdom.”

That sort of rhetoric presents a stark contrast to some other members of the GOP presidential field, who have variously called for resistance to Islamic cultural conquest and outright restrictions on Muslims in public life.

Perry also brokered a 2008 partnership between the University of Texas and Aga Khan University in Pakistan to expand cooperation on programs including the Muslim Histories and Culture Project, which trains high school teachers on Muslim history and culture curricula. “I have supported this program from the very beginning, because we must bridge the gap of understanding between East and West if we ever hope to experience a future of peace and prosperity,” Perry said at the signing ceremony.
