A 25-year-old man sued the Gretna Police Department Tuesday, alleging his civil rights were violated by a police officer who sicced his canine on him without provocation, leading the dog to bite

I'm in Gretna NE.
We don't even have "city cops" here.
City cops are not the only thing that Gretna La. has that you don’t have.
“He started saying, ‘Stop fighting with my dog,’ and he released the dog on me,” Melancon said /
Why would the officer say”stop fighting with my dog” when he hadn’t even released the dog to attack. Somethings not right with this guys story. He sure remembers alot even though he says he was in shock. Something isn’t right here.
LOL. Yeah... I know! Thanks
“IMHO a cop could use a dog to do the work that he knows he would be charged with if he did it himself.”
On this, we agree... The dog, no mater what people want to say, is just a tool in the holster of the cop. If there is misuse, it falls upon the cop.
According to the following, there were two children in the apartment.
“Melancon’s fiancée, Ashley Braxton, was at home at the time of the arrest with the couples two children. According to the police report, Braxton lied to the police officers and told them Melancon wasnt on the property. In another police report, Officer Mekdessie wrote he took notice of some movement in back of the apartment and then released the K-9. Melancon was allegedly heading for the back bedroom which prompted Zin to attack Melacons. It just so happens that the pups bite was much worse than his bark.”

The “pup” needs to be “put down” if it acts independently. If the cop is not responsible, then the dog needs to be killed.
I have known a lot of cops in my time and not once have I met one that bit a suspect in the groin or would even want to.
That said, I would venture to suspect should be more than a little relived that the dog was trained to go for the (no, I can't say it)groin area rather than the throat.
It would have been poetic justice if the guy would have shot the cops dog. (It’s not a joke)
Okay...was the police dog -actually- a Dobermann or are we starting the 70's "killer Dobermann" hysteria crap again?
Are we back on the "hit list", already?
[virtually no LEOs use Dobes any more and -no- LEOs use pinch collars on their dogs]
Police dogs are trained to grab for the arm or the hand, if the suspect has a gun.
Their job is to -detain- the suspect by those grabs.
No law enforcement agency trains their dogs to go for the crotch.
The story doesn’t add up.
nonsense....the dog doesn't attack people walking down the street, he attacks those idiots who choose to be on the wrong side of the law. There is rarely an error in these incidents....possible, yes, probable....not a chance.
True.
But I like my version better. Remember if the truth is in conflict with the legend (in this case, the fun) print the fun.
Ugh.
I want the -truth-, be it good, bad or ugly.
Did anyone see what happened between the time the dog was sent to the back room and the bite?
Did the perp provoke the bite somehow?
The only way I can conceive of a well trained PD doing that is *if* the guy shielded his crotch with his hands and the dog’s aim was ‘off’.
I know a lot of K9 handlers/trainers and this is simply bizarre.
My 2nd Dobe *was* trained for that “area” but then again, his target would’ve been my pedophile uncle.
It would have been completely justifiable, IMO but the freak never touched me again after I got that dog so we never had to deal with any ‘aftermath’.
remember, children, your cutest doggie is just a fancy breed of wolf!
Wolves don’t ‘go for the crotch’, either.
[and it’s “the wolf in your living room”, technically]
Too bad it’s not on youtube for proof, but I’ve heard tell of a cat killing a much larger dog. Cat zeroed in on the jugular and it was all she wrote for that dog. Cat waited till big mean dog invaded its territory (including kids) through. Cat didn’t go around hunting for a dog to kill.
