Is Door Closed on Palin?

Seth Mandel

August 10, 2011

In April, Human Events published a column offering ten reasons Sarah Palin will run for president. Last month, Fox News host Greta Van Susteren blogged about the seven reasons Palin will run for president. Then last week, Henry D’Andrea, writing in the Washington Times, offered three reasons he believes Palin will run for president.

Though I’ve been skeptical all along that Palin would run, I would imagine the entrance of Rick Perry into the race will give Palin one very good reason not to. Perry’s candidacy has, as many others have pointed out, put several of the Republican campaigns on life support. As I wrote last week, the latest Gallup poll numbers show once Perry is included, Republican primary voters show substantially less interest in candidates outside the field. There may still be calls for Paul Ryan or Chris Christie to get in the race, but Perry has quieted the clamoring for “someone else.” But the numbers also show why he easily replaces Palin.

Perry has two impressive numbers in the Gallup polling: his overall placement (second, right behind Mitt Romney) and his “positive intensity score.” Gallup defines this as “the difference between strongly favorable and strongly unfavorable opinions among those who are familiar with him or her. This score provides an indication of the intensity of support among a candidate’s base of followers at any given point in the campaign.”

In the most recent Gallup polling, Perry’s positive intensity score is at 23, five points higher than Palin’s 18. The full poll, however, shows when Perry and Palin are in the race together, Perry polls at 15 percent to Palin’s 12. (The poll includes Rudy Giuliani as well.) Additionally, Perry has the kind of grassroots support, popularity with conservative new media and solid reputation among conservative evangelical voters from which Palin would build a campaign.

For Palin to run, she would need to focus her firepower on a moderate establishment candidate, like Romney. But Perry may well begin his official campaign as either the frontrunner or close to it. A Palin candidacy would seem unnecessary to primary voters once Perry is in the race. I’m sure speculation will continue, but Perry seems to have closed the door on a Palin candidacy this year.

"...split the Conservatives ensuring that RINO Romney wins..."

Truly pathetic "sky is falling" garbage. Palin smokes Romney and Perry combined. Use your brain.

Bachmann / Caine.. the dream team...
Palin would make a good person in Bachmanns cabinet.. or even as White House chief of Staff..

##

Bachmenn/Rubio = Morning in America

Palin would be great a head of the RNC handing out the party money and recruiting conservatives to run instead of RINOs.

Was this written by Seth Mandel or Howie Mandel?
I agree with you that no one makes the libtards heads explode like Sarah can - they don't seem to be too afraid of Perry, (not that I'd mind Perry) and I'm wondering why he doesn't scare them like Sarah does?

“I am sorry but Perry is nothing more than a RINO, a Republican establishments wet dream”

That woud be Romney. Perry is anti-Washington, big state’s rights guy.

Real Alaskians can speak to this better that I, but I have read and heard that the real Sarah Palin on the campaign trail is hell on wheels.

We didn't see the real SP in 2008. I hope we will get that honor and privilege soon...

"Has she done the groundwork and built the party support that it takes to run?"

Organizing for Palin (O4P) Statewide groups all across America have got everything in place and ready to go. Only 9 or 10 States to go, and all of the earliest primary States have been O4P prepared for months.

Palin already has “boots on the ground” in every state except for 5-10 (can’t remember the exact number).

How many does Perry have?

I could go for a Palin/Perry 2012 ticket. As long as Sarah is on top, I trust whomever she chooses for VP.

Sarah is a fierce competitor. She WANTS the competition and may the best one wins.

One thing is certain, they will not split the Conservative vote. I could be wrong and am very willing to eat crow if I must, but if Sarah and Perry both jump in, I can see Perry backing out to support Sarah.

Just MHO. As I have stated, if I am wrong, I will eat the crow with a smile.

It’s going to come down to who is the best campaigner and who runs the best campaign from those three.

I can tell you right off, Palin is the best campaigner—Perry won’t play nationally and Romney is a dork.

I hope she runs the best campaign, too.

Rubio’s got to be on the VP side of the ticket, no matter who runs.

And don’t tell me he’s “not eligible”, because his parents weren’t born in the U.S. If Obama was eligible, then Rubio is eligible.

I respectfully disagree with your points.

That's your right. Doesn't make them any less correct, however.

We saw hints of it, but every time she started to gain ground, his campaign reined her in.

Palin on the stump is butt-kick nirvhana. She takes no prisoners and pulls no punches. Most exciting is her innate sense of knowing exactly what to say to make her opponent snap like a twig. She gets in their heads, and under their skin, and takes them completely off their game.

Hell, look what she did to poor little Joey Biden! The only way he was able to walk out of there with the most ardent liberal rump-sucks spinning it as a draw was by making up 24 of the "facts" he cited from whole cloth!

I remember like it was yesterday when he said, "See, I was there when we kicked Syria out of Lebanon!

Problem was, he was mistakenly referring to when Israel (not us) kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon. Syria was never in Lebanon! LMAO!!!! I remember before that debate, everone was saying how "Biden would be the guy that gave the Obama Team the "Foreign Policy" gravitas..."

BWAAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
