King Tut and half of European men share DNA

According to a group of geneticists in Switzerland from iGENEA, the DNA genealogy center, as many as half of all European men and 70 percent of British men share the same DNA as the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun, or King Tut.

For a film created for the Discovery Channel, scientists worked to reconstruct the DNA of the young male King, his father Akhenaten and his grandfather Amenhotep III. They discovered that King Tut had a DNA profile that belongs to a group called haplogroup R1b1a2. This group can be found in over 50 percent of European men and shows the researchers that there is a common ancestor.

This genetic profile group is also found in 70 percent of Spanish males and 60 percent of French males however, it is only present in less than one percent of men in modern-day Egyptian men.

The R1b1a2 DNA haplogroup is believed to have originated in the Black Sea region some 9500 years ago and spread to Europe with the spread of agriculture in 7000BC. Researchers are unsure as to how and when the group first came to Egypt. They believe the reasoning the R1b1a2 haplogroup is rarely found in modern-day Egypt is due partially to European immigration throughout the last 2000 years.

iGENEA plans to continue to search for more DNA lineage and are looking to discover King Tut’s closest living relatives. They announced this week that they are selling a DNA service for between 139 and 399 euros and they will test the DNA of those people who are interested in seeing how related to King Tut they may be. This offer, according to Roman Scholz who is the director of iGENEA, has already gained a lot of interest.

Tut, nicknamed the ‘Stilt’, was actually almost 6’5”, and in his youth played for the Cairo Capitols.

“men share the same DNA”

Doubt it. Could be we share similar DNA but not the same.

Not really. Apparently there are very few ‘Egyptians’ left in Egypt. They have been replaced by Arabs.............What this article means is that the true Egyptians migrated into Europe millenia ago and became the ‘natives’...................

So a lot of European people had the same ancestors as TUT, it does not mean they are from tut. Only they shared common ancestors. If this was not true then it would be a real shock.

Look at the Egypt of Tut and Amenhotep and all that culture accomplished and then take a close look at the squalor of modern Egypt. Does anyone really believe that these people are the modern descendents of that great race? I certainly don’t. I’m not in the least surprised to see that only 1% of modern Egyptians share DNA with that ancient culture.

“...this would presume a link between the western world and the Third Dynasty.”

I think it just means that Tut and many Europeans share a common ancestor.

That’s another possibility. Depends on where the ‘closest ancestor’ turns up, and their genealogy.

Wouldn’t it be wild if Queen Elizabeth were the closest relative to King Tut?

That’s another possibility.

It’s possible, but unlikely that the Ancient Egyptians originally came from Europe. More likely, that they came from the black sea region at the beginning of the holocene, and eventually migrated down there.

So the only contact between Europeans and Egyptians would have been a very long time ago. It all depends on which half of the British people turn out to have the Tut connection. If it’s the half that were there prior to the Romans (ie, Celtiberians, etc, then yes, it would go back to there.

If it turns up in the Roman era Britons, then that would be very cool, and would likely imply that the connection runs from Egypt to Europe. Which would be really cool.

R1b1a2 haplogroup is rarely found in modern-day Egypt . . . .

If the Copt population were broken out I'm sure the incidence of that haplogroup would match European percentages.

The entire R1b group is extremely rare among the Jewish people, with less than 10% expressing any of the R1b groups, so it appears that King Tut was “not a Jew.”

Looks like you are right. It’s Celtiberian distribution.

Actually, it turns out the 1 percent is from British immigrants to Egypt from the time it was a British colony.

The Copts seem to be Semitic people, like the Jews, moreso then the Celtiberians or the Greeks.

This sort of thing rarely happens, if ever, as per Cavalli-Sforza. The rural agricultural populations that are the base of all civilized cultures are very hard to eradicate. Conquerors generally just replace the upper classes and at best the urban centers, which historically have been population sinks - where races go to die.

Also, other factors such as historically linked languages - Coptic is related to Arabic, etc., suggest that the present Egyptian population is in fact descended mainly from the ancient Egyptian population.
