Almost all GOP presidential hopefuls oppose debt deal [ GOP Fighting Slavery- Again]
Los Angles Times ^ | Aug 1 2011

The almost unanimous opposition by Republican presidential contenders to Washington's bipartisan debt limit deal reflects the pull of conservative — and particularly "tea party" — voters as the 2012 nominating contests near.

Mitt Romney, the early national front-runner, on Monday broke weeks of evasion on the topic by rejecting the agreement his party's leaders in Congress struck with President Obama and the Democrats. In a brief statement, the former Massachusetts governor said he "personally cannot support this deal" because it leaves open the possibility of future tax increases or further defense cuts.

Republican strategists said Romney's opposition reflected the political realities of the 2012 contest and, in Romney's case in particular, a need to protect his right flank against conservative rivals. That concern has, if anything, been enhanced by the likely candidacy of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a strong favorite of many in the tea party movement. Perry has declined to take a position on the deal.

Among all top GOP presidential candidates, only former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. supported the agreement. Huntsman has been running to the left of the Republican field on a host of issues.

Yeah right, typical lying scumbag politicians. Their party supports it and votes for it, yet somehow all of the same party’s Presidential candidates are against it. I don’t know how they live with themselves.

Romney was for it, before before he was against it.

Predictable. They all run to the right before the election, and say what they think the voters want to hear.

Then when they’re in, most of them do whatever gets them the most pork.

That’s why we need to nominate and elect someone whom we can TRUST to do the right thing AFTER the election.

Sarah Palin is the only one of them who has proved she can be trusted on stuff like this. While she was governor of Alaska she even turned down free federal pork, something very few politicians have ever done.

Every GOP candidate in every primary race in the country will be against this deal from now on, and will swear up and down that if we'd just elect them why they'll go to Washington and really shake up the status quo.

Until they are elected and have the opportunity themselves to choose between speaking for the lowly taxpayer or whoring for the welfare state.

“Romney’s case in particular, a need to protect his right flank against conservative rivals”

Is the Left Coast Slimes really that clueless/unaware that most conservatives, if given the choice of voting for Mittens or wiping the First Wookie’s a** with their bare hand, would choose the latter?

Upon review of the source I found no reference to “fighting slavery again” in the LA Times piece.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a strong favorite of many in the tea party movement.

Really? I wonder when that happened?

Yeah right, typical lying scumbag politicians. Their party supports it and votes for it, yet somehow all of the same party’s Presidential candidates are against it.

Same thing over and over...

Good cop, bad cop...

Like masked wrestlers, as the audience of easily impressed fools applaud, thinking it's all real, as the fighting opponents go for beer after the rehearsed spectacle.

My support for the Republican party ended abruptly years ago. I won't ever be betrayed by that party again.

Compromise over conservatism

Party over principle.

Party and power over patriotism, regardless of consequences.

What “pull”? ALL republican senate and house CANDIDATES opposed spending increases and promised to cut it. The problem with republicans and democrats after they get elected is they lie.

How many times do Republicans get fooled before they realize non of their candidates ever has or ever will cut government? Government has grown since 1913. The Federal Reserve and the Income Tax are the biggest impediment to limited government. True small government candidates must start there.
