Flanked by top auto maker executives, Obama said the new rules would lower the country's oil use by 2.2 million barrels a day over the next 15 years and save U.S. consumers almost $2 trillion in fuel costs.
What calculations are they using for the price of gas 15 years from now? It's almost 4X more expensive than it was 15 years ago.

I thought the commies were going to force everyone into driving GM Volts by 2025. There isn't going to be any need for oil and gasoline. Oil companies will be giving it away.

The gas we are getting today has several factors leading to repair problems. It is now 10% ethanol and will go to 20% next year ...then eventually 50%.
That fuel gets less mileage, so we use more of it. It is also prone to generating moisture (water) which erodes many of the parts in the engine and fuel system such as carburetors and injectors.

Since it’s an average, look for Ford Motor to offer a 50cc motor scooter that get 150 mpg.

Why 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025?
Think big. Big round numbers.
How about 100 miles per gallon by 2025?
At least 1000 miles per gallon by 2050.
Minimum 10000000 miles per gallon by 2100.

While he’s at it, I sure hope he sets some regulations covering tinsel strength for suspenders.
We need him to address issues like this. Who else is going to do it if he doesn’t?
Damn it!
The nation is going to hell in a hand basket, and this fruit loop thinks gas mileage is his mandate.

Why would automakers embrace such fascism? Is it merely because Hussein held a gun to their heads? If I were a capitalist king, I would tell Hussein to shove his regulations high and deep—and that I intend to make cars that are WANTED BY THE PUBLIC.

Sure we auto company executives can do this Mr President - in 15 years I am going to be on a beach far out of US jurisdiction and it will be my 3rd generation successors who will be paying your tax bills and sweating the aluminum foil car bodies and the engines powered by liters of liquid unobtanium that this conservative proposal requires. Yepper, sure enjoyed my photo op with you, it will be a real keepsake for my kids, I’m leaving them a dartboard as well.

As one of my "auto gnomes" noted we are making people movers not family movers especially with the MPG fixation trunk space and extra space for kids goes bye-bye.
Then again they are trying to fundamentally transform the American Family too.....
An all aluminum Diesel/Hybrid Minivan to meet these numbers? I don't think so, the Mom and Dad with 4 kids will not be able to swing it, my guess it it would be $10,000 more than a Volt...
