MOSCOW (AP) Russia plans to de-orbit the mammoth International Space Station in a controlled descent into the Pacific in 2020, a top space official said Wednesday.
Deputy head of Russia's federal space agency Roscosmos Vitaly Davydov said that the station "cannot be left in orbit" after it stops operation.
He said in a web-posted statement that the station will have to be de-orbited in a "planned crash so that there is no space junk left behind."

I guess the international space station belongs to them now since they are the only ones that can get to it.
If it is abandoned and not to be used again, it would be irresponsible to allow it to possibly fall on a populated area.
Apparently. But it’s only fair....The cost of one shuttle trip could feed thousands of Muslims..../s
after it stops operation.
It should not be allowed to go out of commission. It should evolve, grow, adapt, change over time. New modules can be added, old ones removed. Much easier to build with something to start with then to start from scratch once again.
Good thing the Ruskies don’t have to deal with the EPA and Greenpeace. That thing is bound to be full of hazardous materials.
There must be a way to blame Bush.
And now, for the next 8 years, anything gained from the space station (information, etc.) belongs to the Russians also, as well as any significant discoveries, etc. Thanks, Obama. Snarl.
Isn’t it interesting that this comment comes one week after the last shuttle has landed.
This announcement could have been made jointly in 2018 or even later.
I cannot believe the poor level of leadership this nation has had.
Super collider gone. Space program gone. Half or Navy gone. The F22 cancelled. The F35 on the chopping block. The rest of the military on the chopping block. Manufacturing jobs gone. Other jobs being outsourced. Our borders wide open. Foreign nationals dictating how we conduct our business.
Our nation being bankrupted so we can never pursue these goals again.
It’s quite difficult to take in what Washington has done, and not be the slightest bit negative about our nation’s future.
This isn’t just mis-management, it’s a concerted effort!
Well, in any event, it's one of the last items in the Hopi prophecies.
"You will hear of a dwelling house in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people shall cease. These are the signs of the great destruction that is coming."

Don’t tell the government. Excellent airborne weapons platforms like the F-16 and F/A-18 could have been upgraded with canards, thrust vectoring exhaust, and the shape changed with external panels to make them more stealthy for a tiny fraction of producing the F022 and F-35.
All empires end, usually by suicide.
Nothing on the public’s roster of aircraft to come (including the F35), or in the past (the two planes you mentioned), will ever compete with the F22.
It’s safe to say that the F22 was the pinnacle of US military technology, and the compromise F35 design is testament to that fact. We are already going down hill.
I thought the new manned rocket program was cancelled by Obama.
It might be compared to a man driving his Rolls Royce for a few years and then dumping it into the ocean.
Can we at least save the cr@pper?
V-GER????

In the military, you dont get promoted for running a cheap upgrade program. You get promoted by running a big, expensive, important technology-bending program. Also, politicians get lobbied for money and favors and such lobbying generates campaign cash.
They’ll probably send us a bill for waste disposal.
