Boehner tries to tame GOP on debt ceiling plan

Boehner: 'Get your ass in line' By: Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan July 27, 2011 09:55 AM EDT

Scrambling for votes on his troubled deficit package, Speaker John Boehner told GOP lawmakers Wednesday morning to “get your ass in line” behind his debt ceiling bill, saying the Senate will fold and pass it.

“This is the bill,’ Boehner said in a closed-door meeting of House Republicans on Wednesday morning. “I can’t do this job unless you’re behind me.”

Boehner was forced to postpone the vote until Thursday after the Congressional Budget Office said it fell $150 billion short of the $1 trillion goal. Many GOP lawmakers are still undecided whether they will back the measure.

Boehner also predicted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) and Senate Democrats will have to pass his proposal once the House does. Reid has an alternate plan to cut $2.7 trillion.

“If this gets chaotic, they (the Senate) will fold like a cheap suit,” Boehner said, according to GOP sources.

The only thing I despise and don't trust at all about this plan is the committee. If that committee has dims on it, and it will, they will without one iota of a doubt come out for tax increases in phase 2.

So whats the plan to prevent that? If theres nothing to prevent them from getting tax increases, they will, by gaia, get tax increases.

Why does Boehner think this time the Senate will even allow a vote?

Because the fix has been in for some time. However, Bonehead screwed the pouch when his plan fell short of the “phantom” spending cuts, based on the CBO scores. He can’t even get his own sham of a plan right. Lesson to learn: If u r going to try to hoodwink Americans with a sham plan, at least get the numbers right.

“Cut, cap, and balance” has already passed the House, quite comfotably. Go home, Mr. Speaker, and dismiss the House. The ball is now in the Senate’s court. The Senate has not even brought CC&B up for debate or a vote yet. Mr. Speaker, your job is done until the Senate acts.

So, get your ass out of town.

Trouble is, there will be a problem with bringing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the senate with all the dims still in it. I think realistically we have to take the White House and the Senate before we are gonna get that. We don't have the leverage yet. As much as I hate to admit that.

Besides being great policy, the BBA is a great campaign issue for the GOP. A huge majority of the electorate favors a BBA.

I advocate bringing the BBA up again sometime next fall in the midst of the silly season. Force everyone in Congress to take a stand on it and explain their stand to their constituents.

I doubt Reid would bring it to a vote in the Senate (it might actually pass the Senate, then Obama would be screwed) and when he doesn't, Democrats will be on the hot seat.

Let every person in Congress explain why Joe 6P has to balance his budget, but the federal government can just keep racking up debt.

I’ve gravitated to Levin lately

Me too. Levin has been hammering these hacks. He does not hold back. GO LEVIN!

If nothing serious can get done, fine. That is no reason to compromise.

I'd keep sending CCB back to the senate and every time it is rejected without a vote, I'd cut off a few million more in spending and send it back again.

They could even change the name of CCB, call it CBE "cut and balance eventually", but still make no changes.

But there should certainly be no compromise on what is right, just keep sending it over and over again. That is what I'd do, anyway.

Boehner wants to seem reasonable, and the Leadership is TERRIFIED that the Obama-backing media will blame THEM, just like 1994.

Obama’s ONLY CONCERN is that he doesn’t want to revisit this issue before the 2012 elections, because he knows it’s a loser.

But his plan is more smoke and mirrors, without real change. Thank God the Tea Party is holding his feet to the fire now.

This is coming eventually, now is better than later.

Reid has an alternate plan to cut $2.7 trillion

I wonder.

Has the CBO scored Reid's plan?

CCB had big public support and would have gone a long way to solving our problems. I don’t understand why the House gave up on it so fast Reid called it bad names and zero said he’d veto it and poof - something most of us liked was dead. You’d think public pressure - incited by the GOP - would have forced the Senate to vote on it and then they could have dared zero to veto it.

No, John...YOU get your ass in line behind those freshmen Congressmen...they were sent there by the people last November to CUT spending and repeal DeathCare, and to get it done now. No more smoke and mirrors...as far as I am concerned; you should be replaced in 2012...the ‘old boy’ network must GO!

“Assume Boehner’s plan passes.
- The GOP looks more reasonable, in bending to avoid default.
- Obama will have to go through this one more time before the 2012 election.
Both things could lead to enough gains that real reform could be possible.
Sometimes pragmatism isn’t all bad.”

Or maybe the marxist vetoes Boehner’s bill, leaving him holding the bag for the ensuing mess (and there would be a mess, driven by fundamentals, and exacerbated by fear and greed). Pragmatism won’t permit him to risk the consequences, so the Republicans would win this particular skirmish if the bill makes it to the marxist’s desk. Which is why Obama, Reid and Pelosi want to kill Boehner’s bill.

We have to get rid of Obama and the Dem majority in the Senate first

We heard that same tune we the GOP controlled ALL three branches of GOVT not that long ago. And they spent like drunken sailors as well.

For people who think like u, it’s always the next fight, always the next election... it’s NEVER THE PRESENT. Never a time to draw a line in the sand. And that is why it never changes, because people who think like you always want to put off the tough choices in the future, never the present.

Boehner needs to negotiate like Lisa Douglas used to negotiate with Mr. Haney on Green Acres.

First, he sends a bill with $200 Billion cuts per year.

Senate or Obama trash it.

Next, he sends a bill with $300 Billion cuts per year.

Senate or Obama trash it.

Next, he sends a bill with $400 Billion in cuts per year ...

[That would give the GOP plenty of ammo to confront the Senate and Obama — hey we send a bill and they vote it down or veto it — but they have only come up with one bill, from Obama, and the Senate voted that down 97-0. The Dems don’t want to resolve this and they haven’t come up with a budget in over 800 days now.]

There are so many different plans out there but if I am not mistaken Reid’s plan includes getting rid of Bush’s 2013 tax cuts, but it does not call it a tax increase.
