A new poll conducted for the Club for Growth showed Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) and his primary challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, in a statistical dead heat.
Mourdock had a small advantage over Lugar, 34 percent to 32 percent, in the Basswood Research poll released Tuesday. But Mourdocks 2-point lead is within the polls 4.4-point margin of error.
The conservative, anti-tax organization has not endorsed Mourdock, but the Club for Growth President Chris Chocola has frequently criticized Lugars record. Earlier this month, the club sponsored television advertisements blasting Lugar across Indiana.
An incumbent who sits at 32 percent in his own partys primary, and trails a much less known challenger, is in a world of trouble, Chocola, a former Indiana Congressman, said in a statement. Senator Lugar is a very decent man, but its clear from the poll that after 35 years, Hoosier Republicans are eager for a more conservative alternative.
About one-third of those polled, 34 percent, said they were undecided about the GOP Senate primary field.
Basswood Research conducted the poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters July 23-24
I’ve also seen the commercials. I have news for him. We will not forget his crappy votes the last 10+ years.
It’s almost time for Don Merideth to sing, “turn out the lights, the party’s over.”
I have not voted for Lugar in years... just passed that seat up when I was voting. So glad to see that he is FINALLY being challenged! That was one of my big complaints to the RNC when they would call me for a donation. Told them that as long as they continued to support these losers and not give us a Conservative choice, they’d not get my money. All I got was “ahhh, well.....”
I hope Lugar loses. I think he’s a lib.
It will be VERY hard to overcome the advantage an incumbent has when there is a Party Line Ballot in a primary unless the incumbent screws up seriously or the challenger is far ahead. The Party Bosses in each County are generally beholden to the incumbent and he/sje gets the Party Line. A lot of registered voters just go in and cast a primary ballot for the Pary Line Candidate.
I’ll vote for Mourdock - hope he gets it. But I’m not holding my breath. This is the state that put Coats and Bayh in office...Repeatedly.
At the Hendricks County Fair, the GOP booth was handing out Lugar stickers, etc. I had to go the the TEA Party booth to get the petitions, yard signs, stickers and sign up for volunteer work for Mourdock.
The Indiana GOP is an old-boy network, and Coats (the POS) election is a prime example. May we can finish off the the old GOP here in Indiana.
I agree. It was the Tea Party’s first go-round. We’ll be even more organized with better candidates this time.
One BIG caveat, however: if Romney is the presidential nominee, all bets are off.
I think his poll numbers will only worsen, and during the debates..and he'll have to debate, he will come off very bad..no..he's gone, and he and Hatch can open an office in DC together
I got a call from a pollster a couple of days ago asking if I was going to vote in the 2012 Republican primary here and I told him Heck yes!. He then asked if I was going to vote for tea party backed Richard Mourdock, or incumbent Dick Lugar. I didnt even hesitate for a millisecond when I said Mourdock.
He then informed me he was calling for Dick Lugar and asked what I thought was the most important issue in Washington today. When I told him the debt crisis he seemed to like that answer, but then I quickly followed it up with Second only to term limits of course. He thanked me for my time and hung up.
HA! Its the local committeeman and county county chairs that want his ass out pronto. My mother is a committeeman in our county, and they all admit its time for new blood in his seat. Lugar will not be getting the support he's enjoyed before at the county level.
That’s good news.
This is excellent news. I look forward to sending Lugar packing. I intend to get a “Mourdock for Senate” yard sign next year.
Why wait ? Get the sign now and enlighten neighbors.
I want to correct this: It wasn’t the TEA Party booth, but rather the Hendricks County GOP (we talked alot about the TEA Party, there). The state GOP booth was backing Lugar.
Only 7? ;d That chamber needs to get younger.
Great screen name.
Thanks.
