A new poll conducted for the Club for Growth showed Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) and his primary challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, in a statistical dead heat.
Mourdock had a small advantage over Lugar, 34 percent to 32 percent, in the Basswood Research poll released Tuesday. But Mourdocks 2-point lead is within the polls 4.4-point margin of error.
The conservative, anti-tax organization has not endorsed Mourdock, but the Club for Growth President Chris Chocola has frequently criticized Lugars record. Earlier this month, the club sponsored television advertisements blasting Lugar across Indiana.
An incumbent who sits at 32 percent in his own partys primary, and trails a much less known challenger, is in a world of trouble, Chocola, a former Indiana Congressman, said in a statement. Senator Lugar is a very decent man, but its clear from the poll that after 35 years, Hoosier Republicans are eager for a more conservative alternative.
About one-third of those polled, 34 percent, said they were undecided about the GOP Senate primary field.
Basswood Research conducted the poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters July 23-24
Bey Bey RINO!
I didn’t know Lugar was a Republican. When did that happen?
Long overdue. Has DeMint come out against Lugar? I hope he does....awesome that Club for Growth is taking him on!!!!
Lugar is in trouble. 2012 is off to a good start. 2012 will be the year America cleans out DC.
May the best Dick win.
And so it begins.
Pay attention DC aholes.
Something happens to the people we send to Washington if they stay too long. Dick Lugar, Kit Bond, Charles Grassley are examples...
Looks like Lugie is gonna pretend to be a conservative for the next few months.
States compete to keep sending guys to Washington so they get seniority and can begin sending the loot back home.
When you kick out one of the old bulls like Lugar you get a new guy with no seniority. He may sit there as long as 5 years before getting a chance to speak.
Purge the RINOs!
You have outlined the problem. It’s become a spoils system based on seniority.
That happened way back when they were debating The National Road.
DeMint has now made it policy not to oppose any GOP incumbents, so he won’t be attacking Lugar or donating to his primary opponent (unless said opponent wins the primary). He is staying out of primaries involving republican incumbents.
The Party Line.
Does Ohio use the Party Line on ballots?
Great Scott, but it takes a long time to get rid of a cancerous cyst like this Lugar RINO.
I can’t wait. Some thought 2010 was a flash in the pan. They aint seen nothing yet.
ah, yes, I remember hearing that now...thanks for the reminder.
But back to the point: Lugar is going down!
Lugar is from Indiana, not Ohio. We do have Party Line ballots.
True. On top of that I am pretty sure Lugar is either senile at this point or bat-shit crazy. He makes absolutely no sense and has sold out on issue after issue to the Obamaites.
I am hoping the polls get worse and he just bows out before the primary, deciding to ‘spend more time with his family.’ With these early poll numbers, he is going to have a difficult time keeping his seat.
Locally, here in Indiana, Lugar’s been running commercials talking about how fiscally conservative he’s been during his tenure in Washington. Showing lots of old footage of him and Ronald Reagan...he’s hoping voters will forget what he’s been like lately.
