A south Bossier City homeowners association has sued to force a family to remove a front yard sign supporting their son's military service because it violated subdivision covenants.
The Burrs placed a large multicolored banner with a picture of their 20-year-old son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Burr, and the phrase "Our son defends our freedom" in January after Corey Burr was deployed to Afghanistan.

According to a neighbor of the Burrs' (I spoke to one of them), there are no other such signs that they claim............
I have no problem with my HOA other than the current lawsuit against an adjacent sub which is responsible for keeping our access road repaired. Meaning, it needs to be completely resurfaced, we won in court and they are now appealing.
I also have no problem with my HOA's regulation disallowing lawn signs considering more than half the people in the complex are Democrats and would have had John Kerry or Obama for president signs posted on their front lawns.........
Our HOA laws also prohibit the leasing or renting out of your property......you may not like that but we currently have two places being rented out. One to some kids who love to work on their cars in their garage and another unit who loves to let their dogs run without leashes.........We're fighting the owners in court right now.......
As I said, I have no problem with HOA's, they helping to keep my sub livable and civil......
Wow! No offense but can you tell me where you live so I can avoid it in the future?
What’s with all you people who go crazy if you see a sign on somebody’s property? Why would you care? As a wiser person on this thread wrote, it’s not your neighbor’s sign that’s lowering your property values, it’s the man in the White House.
Are you a member of the HOA under discussion? I can’t even tell from the article what state we are talking about. NOLA sounds like New Orleans but who knows.
Bossier City is near Shreveport, Louisiana.
If membership is required for home ownership in the subdivision, it is mandatory. You don’t pay your dues, they foreclose your house. You paint your house the wrong color, they sue you to make you repaint. You don’t repaint, they paint it and send you the bill. You don’t pay the bill, they foreclose. You violate a covenant, they fine you until you comply. You don’t pay, they foreclose you.
Some folks choose to buy houses subject to those conditions. I have no sympathy when they complain. You don’t want to play by those rules? Don’t buy in those neighborhoods.
Buy without reading the covenants at your own risk.
I also have little sympathy for those who want to deprive misguided folks who wish to live there.
For specifics for Louisiana as to creation, see the Louisiana Homeowners Association Act, R.S. 9:1141.1 et seq.
http://www.legis.state.la.us/lss/search.asp?RS=RS&SearchString=9%3A1141
For specific restrictions, one would need to refer to the covenants for that association.
Unless the rule is that the HOA gets to decide what to approve and what not to approve. THAT is the rule for the HOA to which I belong.
Most sensible people don't buy into an HOA unless they expect that conformance with the HOA rules will serve them better than permitting violations of those rules. If HOAs weren't valuable to the vast majority of HOA owners, they wouldn't exist.
We don't go crazy, the HOA has rules and regulations and the bylaws are presented to every homeowner. Such bylaws prevent lawn signs of any kind (which as I stated, also include pro-Obama and pro-Kerry) from being placed in your front yard. I don't want to see signs advertising masonry, or lawn services or free pizza delivery. I also don't want to see signs advertizing furniture sales at the local furniture store, or free gas for a year with every new car purchased at the local car dealership.
I can live with not being able to put a lawn sign on my front lawn announcing my newphew is currently serving in Afghanistan. The flag hanging from my front porch is all the patriotism I need to display.........
What's with all you crazy people condemning us condo owners and telling us how we should conduct our lives? Mind your own damn business.......!
Maybe I didn't mention it before but we also can keep our neighbors from parking their broken down cars in their driveways and in the street in front of their house........
And we can also force our negligent neighbor into trimming their hideous bushes or force them to remove the trash that has been accumulating on the side of their house.
In other words, we have the ability to prevent our complex from turning into a white trash trailer park...........And I have no problem with that. Why should you?
I love my detached condo sub and the rules that govern us. All you have to do is drive a half mile north to a huge housing sub that a frind of mine lives in, that would once have gone for approx. $225K to see what overpaid white trash and subsequent unemployed white trash will allow their properties to devolve into.
People who criticize us condo dwelers need to mind their own damn business. Condo dwelers who complain about the HOA's and the regulations need to move out or shut up.......
Funny how such topics always bring out you folks who feel it necessary to criticize us..........we never criticize you.
Because, Mr. or Miss Tabasco, unbeknownst to you, you sound like a Soviet minion circa 1936 or a Maoist circa 1967. Embarrassingly so. I’m glad it gives you some sort of satisfaction to go around patrolling what your neighbors are up to and reporting on them. But it’s really your deep-seated fear of untidy hedges that gives me pause.
Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea anything like this existed! I know about condo rules - I was even president for a short while - but nothing about these mandatory HOAs.
In my short term as president of a condo, I learned that it was better to mind my own business than argue with neighbors over doormats and illegal cats. All way too stupid and petty for my husband and I. We sold our beautiful condo by the ocean and moved to a small town in NJ with no homeowner association. Our neighbors are slobs but we love them for their genuine kindness and laid back attitudes towards our own failures as neighbors. And my neighborhood is neither a ghetto nor some “white trash” trailer park.
It's not my untidy hedges, it's the air you breathe in New York.........Go figure, a resident of the liberal bastion of the United States trying to tell me how to choose where I live.
I haven't met a New Yorker or resident of New Jouisy yet that had the courtesy to keep their mouths shout and mind their own damn business........and that includes my equally obnoxious BIL from NY who may have been your neighbor judging by your propensity for telling others how to live.......LOL!
In summation, we condo dwellers don't want lawn signs, we don't want broken down cars in our neighbor's driveways or in front of their houses and we don't want trash stored on the sides of their houses.........Why do you have a problem with that? It's not your business, you don't live here........
At least I’m bold enough to tell my fellow freepers where I live - so people like you can take ignorant digs at NYC - one of the cultural centers of the world and absolutely devoid of Homeowners Associations, thank God. And the town in NJ where I own a home was founded in 1660 and is amazingly beautiful and quiet without busybody neighbors patrolling the streets looking for untidy hedges and garbage cans filled with...garbage.
And since you are on a public forum, why in God’s name would you question my right to speak or write as I see fit?
Lets cut to the chase here. Throughout this thread you have been condemning condominium owners such as me and criticizing my stance in support of the HOA bylaws.
So who exactly is the real dumbass here, ME, the simple condo owner here in Michigan or YOU the resident of New York who suffers the most draconian liberal government in the country, the state that has the highest income taxes and property taxes?
You've got more problems to worry about where you live than to even begin to criticize my home ownership choice and HOA that I and my fellow residents have no problem with.......
Like I said in a previous post, the HOA's keep the white trash from becomming white trash and if they don't like it they don't need to move in...........
Condo living can be nice - until you find out that the banks who foreclosed on most of the units aren’t paying their assessments. Or the developer goes belly up before control passes to the condo owners, and the bank decides that it doesn’t want the liability of operating the swimming pool.
I know there are probably thousands of developments that work out fine - I only see the horror stories.
They’ve got the law in Louisiana sorted out now, but I remember back in the early - mid 1980s when they were trying to figure out how to make a condo work under the Napoleonic Code as a ‘horizontal property regime’.
Damn straight. Why are extra-legal non-governmental organizations allowed to have such control over anyone. You can be denied the ability to purchase a house unless you agree to giving up your rights as a property owner.
Do I need a friggin’ sarcasm tag? HOA’s are for fascists and those who like to tell others how to live.
Nowadays, HOA’s go to court and take people’s houses over fees or fines they impose of $1000 or less.
They can and do ruin many people’s lives and livelihood.
Oh my God, some kids work on their car in their garage and you want to kick them out, you fascist.
Ah, forcing you will on others for the better good of the whole, the very nature of a fascist state. You should really enjoy our current president then, as he is attempting to do the same thing YOU are ALREADY doing to others.
