Americans sweltered today in the scorching heat in what was officially the hottest day of the year in scores of cities across the country.
The heatwave covered a million square miles, affecting 141million Americans.
New York's Manhattan experienced the hottest ever July 22 recorded, with an overwhelming 104-degree temperature in Central Park.
The Washington DC region continued to be smothered in heat and humidity with temperatures reaching 102 degrees but with a heat index of more than 120 - hotter than Death Valley at daybreak

It’s hot in summer? Who knew?
I take the heat index predictions very seriously. And the current heat index reading even more so. But I don't work in an air-conditioned cubicle.
Yes, not bad at all.
I’m not an enviro-nazi, but frankly something is going above and beyond. If it’s like this or worse next summer, I am for one going to start taking the global warming theory a bit more seriously. It’s definately like a sauna now and the death toll is probably highter than 22 people, probably more.
Agree... I do work in the A/C, but I am a runner and the heat index tells me if I can run after work or if I have to get up at 5 and do it in morning. It os all about the humidity.
Well last winter was damn cold on the East Coast and this summer, as a whole has been very mild, albiet the last 2 days were hotter than Jades. Don’t get weather confused with climate.
and in winter the local news readers tell us ..wear warm clothing, its cold out there, check on seniors, and stay inside Heat Centers, and blah blah blah. Then the news readers tell us its HOT out there, stay indoors with A/C wear light clothing, drink water and check on the seniors.
While they are OUTSIDE doing hat we are told we shouldn;t. I mean. come on how stupid do they think we are? (very, obviously)
Here’s the routine, folks: at roughly -15F, your beer freezes on the inside of your bottle when you have a “cold one” after work. At roughly 100F heat index, if you look down at the sweat on your forearm, and it’s not evaporating, you’re screwed unless you find a cold one. Or twelve.
Two summers ago, we (NYC and environs)) had a summer where we did not go over ninety degrees through all of July and at least half of August (if not more...I was on vacay). The Iceman Cometh in Dec/Jan/Feb...Global Cooling, such as when I was in high school (70’s) and we were worrying about the coming Ice Age...who’s with me on this?
Ran my usual Friday evening 10K. Temperature was 99 degrees, but with the sun going down it wasn't too bad.
I skipped my 7 miler this AM. Alarm went off at 5 and I reset it for 615. Have a 13.1 trial scheduled for Sunday morning. Stashing a couple of Gatorades along the course. Last week did 12, which was a personal record so we’ll see how it goes. Can’t wait for the race Labor Day weekend (Virginia Beach Rock n Roll half marathon) so I can get back to the 3 and 5 mile routes. On a positive note I have gone friends m 190 pounds in November to 158 without changing my eating habits at all. Down to wearing 32 inch pants for the first time since I was 15. I am 32 now. I have been running for 4 years, but this is the first time I’ve ramped up the milage like this.
Today in Seattle was the first day in a week or more that we hit 70 I think. Supposed to be 79 or maybe even 80 tomorrow. (A couple of weeks ago we finally hit 80 for 72 minutes!)
Next week is back to the upper 60’s.
“.. and this weather is so unusual.”
Do you think it’s Spock or Lt. Uhuru or just some unnamed alien doing this to you?
“Now yer all lolly gaggin’ around like it’s a hunert ‘n’ twenty’’. “Can’t be more ‘n’ a hunert ‘n’ fourteen!’’.
Good luck to you on your 13.1. I gave those up several years ago. I'm still maintaining my 10K's. Been doing it for 18 years, but it's getting old...and so am I.
Regards.
We’re used to 105+ in Central Ca but this summer we’ve had maybe 7 days that hot. We’ve mostly had temps in the upper 80’s and 90’s. I’ve lived here for 30 years and don’t ever remember summer temps like this.
It may be getting hotter, but this has actually been a pretty normal summer (if not cooler than normal) up to this point. This is the first real "heat wave" we've had here in this area. Only a couple of days of 90+ temperatures before this.
And last winter was colder than normal with a lot of snow, too.
