Americans sweltered today in the scorching heat in what was officially the hottest day of the year in scores of cities across the country.
The heatwave covered a million square miles, affecting 141million Americans.
New York's Manhattan experienced the hottest ever July 22 recorded, with an overwhelming 104-degree temperature in Central Park.
The Washington DC region continued to be smothered in heat and humidity with temperatures reaching 102 degrees but with a heat index of more than 120 - hotter than Death Valley at daybreak

Let me be clear here it was a 102 what it felt like i could care less its summertime its suppose to be hot By my index it it was more like 139 in the shade
I thought Rush said that temperature was a Democratic conspiracy...
LOL the heat has reached the east coast.
Yeah, we don't have the accompanying humidity, but we will beginning early next week.
Suck it up and live with it. We do. Annually. With no fawning press. It's doable. Quite.
I put an ac unit in a small room, I put the kittens in there. It’s hot.
Back there they have the stupidity
I dunno. Last summer we had a week long heatwave that peaked at ninety and I was stuck in a place with no air conditioning and it was the hottest that has ever been. As a kid, it sometimes got no hotter than high Eighties. Now it’s been up to over a hundred and ten in some areas and something IS up. With the fact that concrete has been exploding in some areas, I would have to say that it is getting hotter. In June, we had some blazing temps that usually don’t show up until mid-August and this weather is so unusual.
Abnormally so frankly.
“By my index it it was more like 139 in the shade...”
Much cooler down here. I’ll arrange some South Carolina cool and Black Velvet to be delivered via FedEx to you ASAP.
Enjoy.
In Seattle they are calling it the 28 minute summer, because it has only been above 80 for 28 minutes so far. It only got to 70 degrees today.
I’ve lived in NYC since Ike’s first term. We get heat waves like this once or twice a decade. They suck, but they’re nothing new.
“As a kid, it sometimes got no hotter than high Eighties.”
When I was a kid, northern California had between one and two dozen 100+ days each summer. So far, we’ve had only one day that almost reached 100 but most of the summer has been in the 80’s. Currently 90.
The irony of it is that it has been quite mild here on the east coast this summer. July is almost over and this is the first heat wave this year and it is only lasting 4 days. As a runner training for a half marathon, I know what I am talking about. Other than ‘09, which I remember well because I was unemployed and playing Mr Mom with an infant that summer, this has been the coolest summer in the last 10 years. Newport News, VA
There is no such thing as a heat wave unless it reaches NY or DC.
In my little neck of the woods, it’s been over 100 for 50+ consecutive days, but flyover heat waves don’t matter....
Hot is hot.
But other than this week, it has been relatively mild, right?
