Rick Perry wins Iowa county straw poll
Politico ^ | July 20, 2011 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Clay County GOP chairwoman Kirstine Thiessen confirmed that Perry won the straw poll vote the other night, which was held among those on hand for a planned meeting. The county, I'm told, is in Rep. Steve King's district, and abuts Minnesota.

Of the 59 votes cast, Perry won with 15, followed by Michele Bachmann with 9, Thiessen said. Rick Santorum got eight, Ron Paul got 6, Hermain Cain got 5, Thaddeus McCotter got four, and tied with Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney for that number. Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin each got two votes.

It's not quite a representative sample of the larger Iowa electorate, but it is worth noting.

Well, that’s that. We have our ticket: Perry/Bachman ‘12.

Would you rather that Romney had won it?

Romney has been leading in all the polls so far.

Perry is Romney’s Kryptonite.

“Clay County, Iowa” BIG DEAL, WHO CARES! Polk, Story, Linn, Black Hawk and Johnson are were all of the population centers are.

Read my tag line. Perry is just another Bush! Bachman outshines them all so far. We do’t need no Mormons in the White house either!

I would be interested how the poll went by gender. I would have expected Bachmann to take the cake there.

Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin each got two votes.

The negative media onslaught and continual "she isn't running" statements by the pundits are taking their toll on her popularity. I still believe she can turn it around, but IMO she needs to get in the race no later than early August to succeed.

One longtime observer of Lone Star politics described the Bushes’ disdain of Perry as “visceral,” and it is not too terribly hard to see why. The guy that NPR executives and the New York Times and your average Subaru-driving Whole Foods shopper were afraid George W. Bush was? Rick Perry is that guy. George W. Bush was Midland by way of Kennebunkport. Rick Perry’s people are cotton farmers from Paint Creek, a West Texas town so tiny and remote that my Texan traveling-salesman father looked at me skeptically and suggested I had the name wrong when I asked him whether he knew where it was.

It’s a fairly big deal. This is hyperconservative Vander Plaats territory, and the fact they are voting for a hit-and-miss conservative in Perry when he’s not even in the race is a huge anomaly that could point to a trend.

Being the big population counties are less conservative on the whole and would conceptually be centers of Perry support, this could be a nugget in the turdpile that may signal bigger things to come.

There have been some interesting threads on Mormonism on FR lately. I think Mormonism is very like Islam. So if Romney gets elected it would be a shoe in for sharia Law in the U.S.A.!

I did a straw poll last night here in my apartment. Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet, Apollo the Jack Chi and numerous roaches voted for me. When do I start measuring for new drapes in the oval office?
