A lesbian couple is suing a Vermont inn, claiming it refused to host their fall wedding reception because of their sexual orientation.
Kate Baker and Ming Linsley filed the suit on Tuesday in Vermont Superior Court, accusing the Wildflower Inn of Lyndonville of abruptly turning them away after learning they are lesbians.
They claim the inn violated Vermonts Fair Housing and Public Accommodations Act, which prohibits inns, hotels, motels and other establishments with five or more rooms from turning away patrons based on sexual orientation. The law makes an exemption for religious organizations.
..I think this case could set an important precedent not only for Vermont but for other states with marriage equality, Professor Johnson said,
...The current lawsuit alleges that in October Ms. Linsleys mother, Channie Peters, spoke with the events coordinator at the inn, which has 24 rooms and is on 570 acres in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, according to its Web site.
Ms. Peters said the coordinator referred to a bride and a groom while discussing the bridal suite; Ms. Peters said she corrected the woman and they continued their conversation.
Shortly after the conversation, Ms. Peters received an e-mail with the subject line bad news, according to the lawsuit, and was told the innkeepers did not allow same-sex wedding receptions at the site.
After our conversation, the e-mail reads, according to the lawsuit, I checked with my innkeepers and unfortunately due to their personal feelings, they do not host gay receptions at our facility.

the les will do the same thing that happened to a priest in San Fran for the burial of a gay unrepentent. They will press the case, then, when the hotel says ok, they will say “we don’t want to have the party there in any case, it was just to prove a point...”
but the two les wanted to have their “wedding” party at the only non-queer one.....
Now it's, "Hi, I'm Larry, this is my father Darryl, and my other father Darryl."
Amen!
Shame...now normal couple are denied the opportunity to be married in such a beautiful setting; thanks to these two SELFISH queers.
Don't answer that.
Unfortunately, the state law seems clear and the Inn is large enough to be regulated into required accommodation of these couples. These plaintiffs are likely to prevail in court.
I lived in SF from 1996 to 2007. Believe me, I’ve seen it - accidentally. Never went to it. There are many things I saw in San Francisco I never want to see again from naked men’s butts in chaps to lesbian lover “nuns”.
For me, the 8.0 earthquake can’t level the bay area soon enough. My apologies to bay area Feepers - you are just pawns.
And I will guarantee you this is exactly what will happen to businesses and churches if/when gay "marriage" is legalized. As much as I hate to say it, persecuation of Christians is right around the corner because of this.
I didn't notice this until you posted it. It's where one of my favorite artists, Will Moses, lives, and has his business.
I was trying to be subtle, but yeah, you got my drift.
If they can not refuse to serve gays, can they legally establish a practice of refusing to serve really ugly people? That should result in about the same outcome.
“Give us the use of your time and your private property or we’ll get the government to MAKE YOU give it to us”
A private business should be able to refuse service to anyone they dont want to serve.
